UNC announcer to be reprimanded by Big Sky*

A few points:

- I did not say he would be suspended, nor did I say what the reprimand would be. I believe the Big Sky Conf is going to talk to the UNC administration to see what can be done. The reprimand could be something as weak as just a letter or statement, I have no clue what will actually be done.

- I think that the Big Sky has all the right to take action against an announcer that is openly calling a player a quitter, and consistantley critcizing the officials. Keep in mind the NCAA told Peter Christian to come on the mic during the SDSU playoff game and ask the crowd to stop booing at the officicals. If the NCAA expresses the need to remind fans to respect their officials, the Big Sky should remind announcers of games that they should not cross the line and call student-athletes quitters.

I assume the league does not have the authority to reprimand an individual in private business. But I also assume that "Big Sky" TV has a contractual agreement with the "Big Sky" conference. I would fully expect that part of this contract concerns reasonable behavior on the part of the announcers who essentially present the league to the nation. Also, the UNC announcer did not simply complain about officials constantly, he impugned the character and dignity of one its star players. What would you think if you witnessed this presentation and had no knowledge of the Big Sky Conference. At a minimum, you would judge it as unprofessional, immature, and not worthy of national exposure. You can see that type of announcing in professional wrestling and it has no place in intercollegiate athletics. Thus, is a reprimand (not a suspension). warranrted in this case? - you bet

Exactly. The NCAA has rights over every sweatshirt that's sold and how it looks. How would they not have the right to reprimand a resprentative of the product (NCAA Basketball) on the radio. The guy Troy needs to realize that if he wants to be a fan he should pay for a ticket. If he wants to be on the air he needs to be a professional. As another poster stated, this is not a single occurence. It sounds like he makes an A$$ out of himself on a weekly basis.

:shock:Is this guy on the radio or the floor announcer. By your standards Micks' sidekick in football would have been silenced forever after the first season. During his early years he complained about calls made by officials, teams giving up and super nasty he complained about a players hair. I assume he said some nasty things to say about the former bengal defensive end who plays for the Vikings. I am not complaining about the sidekick and I am not saying that Mick contributed. I was listening to Mick during the Northern Colorado game and if he would have complained about a call I might have turned him off or switched the Northern Colorado guy for an unbiased opinion.

DrJ raises an interesting point. The Conference cannot be happy with the way that broadcast represented the BSC trademark. It wasn't the worst I've heard, but it was close.

I listened to UNC's play-by-play announcer yesterday during the NAU-UNC game on bigskytv.org.

He seems to have knowledge of the game of basketball and has some passion for his team. Both commendable traits for an announcer. I didn't pick up on anything over-the-top or defamatory that he said during the broadcast (i.e. calling out a Griz player as a quitter) but he certainly has a hard time giving any kind of credit to the opposition. Drives into the lane by NAU were charges. Screens were moving picks on NAU's forward/center's part or a travel on the guard's part. UNC could do little wrong on the other hand.

I believe part of his job is to make UNC Bears basketball exciting for its fans who are listening in but I'm going to have to listen in on a few more UNC bigskytv.org broadcasts in the next few weeks.
