UM's Johnson To Workout for Nets
by: Dave Guffey of UM Sports Information
Tuesday, 6/15/2010

Former University of Montana star guard Anthony Johnson has been invited to participate in a private workout for the New Jersey Nets.

The workout, which is strictly for the Nets, will be held on Wednesday, June 16, and includes three other players. Also participating with Johnson are point guard Armon Johnson of Nevada, small forward Marko Kesvli of Serbia, and small forward Duke Crews of Bowie State.

"AJ" had the most prolific two-year career in school history, ending up 14th on UM’s career scoring list with 1,124 points, and he is the first player ever to score 1,000 or more points in just two seasons. He also set a school mark in career free throw percentage at 87.3% (364-of-417).

This past season Johnson was a unanimous All-Big Sky Conference selection and runner-up for the league’s "Player of the Year" award for the second year in a row. He was named a Mid-Major All-American by CollegeInsider.com. He was also tabbed UM’s Carl Dragstedt Award (MVP) winner for the second straight year. He was ranked 22nd in the nation in free throw percentage (87.4%) and 42nd in scoring average (19.2 ppg). His 615 points were the fifth most ever in a season at UM.

Johnson scored 42 points in the 2010 Big Sky tournament championship game against host Weber State to set school and post-season tourney records. In the Grizzlies’ 20-point come-from-behind win, Johnson scored 34 of Montana’s 46 second-half points, including the final 21, to lead his team to an improbable 66-65 win and conference title, giving Montana and head coach Wayne Tinkle the school’s eighth NCAA Tournament berth (a 62-57 first-round loss to New Mexico in San Jose, Calif.).

Wednesday’s workout is closed to the media, although media will be allowed access to the players after the workout.

So where does it say AJ did well? All I seen was a blurb that he was there for a workout.

the guards "were the better players," according to assistant Tom Barrise, who helped conduct the auditions.

With Sac Kings, NY Nets, NY Nicks giving AJ invites for workouts, things look promising for AJ. Even if he doesn't catch on right away in the NBA (and plays overseas or in the NBA D league), he is relatively new to basketball and his potential is great (with hard work). The Kings were concerned with AJ's quickness (he admitedly doesn't have Will Cherry quickness) but he plans on making up for that with getting bigger in the weightroom. The Kings also were concerened wether he could play the point guard position, but he is confident he can, that he has the court vision to be one. He was asked to be a scorer at UM not a point guard. Johnson also said that teams look at your academics and character as well. AJ has those bases covered in spades--a very high caliber kid. The NBA is an incredible lofty goal for anybody, but I think AJ will end up there someday, hopefully the sooner the better!
