UM vs. UNC

GrizLA said:
Not to upset the 'fans" but UM is up by 7 since Selvig went out and they were up under the same circumstances in the 1st half....this is simply a different team when they are faster...Selvig has a definite roll on this team and can produce when he keeps his head in the game and his feet moving but dribbling is not his thing.

The 7 point stat thing isn't accurate. Selvig was out once in the first half and twice in the second half. In the first half, the UM lead went from 10 to 5--so a net loss of 5 points. In the second half, UM went from down 2 to up 1. All that happened was that Cherry hit a 3. The next time Selvig went out, UM's lead increased from 7 to 11, for a 4 point net game. During that time, Ward and Cherry hit jumpers, and Cherry had a steal and dunk.

So for the night, UM made a net gain of 2 points while Selvig was out.

Why do some posters have to make up stats to support their views?

Tinkle should cut Selvig...guys useless and bringing the team down.
You should tell him that.....we know differently but you don't apparently.

GrizLA, you do nothing but complain about how the team would be better without him.....
I do lots of things but I don't blame college kids for not being superstars. The fact is, UM is a different and highly successful team as it showed tonight TWICE, when he is not as fast or effective as the rest of the team..Why you choose to call this blame is your issue and frankly, says more about you....Have a nice night...

Once again, BS to what you're saying about Selvig. You are completely wrong on Selvig. Tonight, he was tied with Jamar as second leading scorer with 12, shot 50% from the field, including 2-3 from 3-pt range, made both of his free throws, was tied for leading rebounder, had 4 assists, 1 turnover, and 1 steal. Played the 3rd most minutes. Another terrific game by Selvig.

I'm not sure how you could know anything less about basketball.

I just got home from the game. I am too tired to put a summary in tonight, but stay tuned to egriz over the weekend. Mr Cherry will be mentioned BIGTIME!!!!!

Seriously man...what is your obsession with Selvig? Someone says one little critical thing about him and you go all emo and start cutting your wrists about it... yet you have no problem with being critical of other Griz players...

It's really weird man.... you should probably just let it go. No one is saying anything like what you claim they are about Selvig.
Selvig probably screwed his girlfriend, so he has it out for him.

Just got home from the game also... Cherry was unreal, man can that guy D it up.

The 1-3-1 three quarter court press really ate UNC up in the second half, that was the difference.

Montana had 36 points off turnovers, while UNC had 6. As BJ Hill said after the game, UNC basically gave MT half their points when looking at it that way. Will have much more to say tomorrow on the site, just wanted to say that few players can make defense look as exciting as Will Cherry.

Just finished watching and then read the thread! Could do without the bickering! Anyway, that was a lackluster middle of the game sandwiched between a great start and finish. Any win is good on the road, though! The most concerning thing was the D going into hibernation there for large chunks after we had been so spoiled with one great D performance after another. Glad they got it sorted. Kareem and Will asserted themselves at the end and that was really the difference. As others stated already, it was nice to see henderson get some minutes and make the most of them, too! Go Griz! Nice win!

I (and others) have been trying to tell the board that Cherry is a great player, who has improved greatly each year. He is lightning quick and fast, and has big hops. He anticipates very well on defense. This shows up on both ends of the court. He works very hard. He does not give up on plays. He has always been able to drive and finish. He learned to shoot free throws last season, and now is one of the top FT shooters in the conference. He learned to shoot the 3 this year, and again is one of the better 3 point shooters in the conference. Somewhere along the way he learned to shoot the mid-range jumper. He's a very good defender. He get lots of steals, often at critical times. He gets alot of rebounds. He's a good ball handler and can break the press.

He has no fear. If his team needs a bucket, a stop, a steal, or a 3, he is going to find a way to do it. When the game is on the line, he is going to make the play. He truly rises to the occasion. He was apparently this way in high school too. He has the heart of a champion, and an extreme desire to win. This season he has often been the one who ignites the comeback or the big run. He is the team leader. Look at Jamar's comments after the MSU game. When Cherry was sitting in foul trouble, Jamar took over the team and the game--playing point guard--saying he was not going to let Cherry down. Look at Cherry's quotes after games. He shows an excellent understanding of the game, and you can tell he listens carefully to the coaches.

He, as well as the team, are fun to watch. I truly don't understand how more fans aren't turning out for the home games. Great entertainment. Very good team. Lots of fun players to watch. Unselfish team. The people in Missoula who are not attending games, are truly missing out. This team has the potential to be special. Maybe they already are.

don't you ever stop?

I am really glad LA is not our coach. Selvig has been a valuable member of this team. He has moments he does great where his strengths match up well, IE a team like ISU, but not so much for UNC. I think Tinkle is doing better at figuring out how to use Selvig. Team has a lot of promise and I am glad Selvig is out there.

I think the main issue is that Selvig is super streaky. If he's in the flow he's a 7 footer that can rain 3s. Nobody can guard that. When he's off, honestly I agree with LA...he's awful. I agree with SoCal though here...Tinkle is doing better at figuring out how to use Selvig and that will pay dividends come tourney time.

I get that Selvig is a divisive player.

His skill set is odd. He isn't nor was he ever a back to the basket guy. I really don't believe people would have many of the issues with his play if he were 6-5 versus 7-0. That being said, he is strangely passive at times and has a habit wilting away into the background. He isn't the player that is fully capable of transforming a game, but rather complimenting a star player or two.

More and more it is apparent that Will Cherry is blossoming into one heck of a player and maybe minus LK and MRR the best pro prospect the Griz have had. He has worked so hard to transform his game. He just isn't a drive and dash guy anymore. While Lillard is an offensive nightmare to handle, I'll take Cherry's ever evolving all court game.

This is a nice win in the middle of the a brutal stretch of 4 games in 7 days, three on the road. You had to figure that defense would struggle some on this road trip. But the Griz do what championship teams do: pulled out a win when they didn't play their best basketball.

As an aside, Montana -- along with Weber -- has already clinched one of the top two seeds in the tournament (assuming my math is correct, which I believe it is).

On to Sac!

I was actually pretty impressed with UNC. The press got to them and they didn't finish strong like the Griz did, but that's because they are a young team. Good win on the road for the Griz.

I think a lot people don't understand Selvig's role on the team. Basketball is all about matchups and roles, and the Griz are tremendously hard to match up with a 7 foot point center. Once Cherry brings the ball up, the offense runs through Selvig and takes the heat off Cherry who in essence can then play shooting guard. When teams prepare for the Griz they prepare for Selvig in that role, and he 's not looking to shoot he's looking to pass. Once Selvig goes out, the Griz return to a more conventional team with Cherry, or Jamaar, at point guard. and the Griz often take advantage of the other teams failure to make the adjustments with Selvig out.

I used to think Selvig tended to come and go during the game, but I've grown to appreciate all of the other things he's does. He's a good passer. I think Tinkle may have said he's the best in the conference. He has the same number of assists as Cherry, conference-only. He usually, but not always, defends well, and is good on help defense in the middle. He's a good shooter. He's a good rebounder. His assist to turnover ratio is 6th in the conference. I think his role on the team is different this year, and he's fulfilling it very well.

Cherry up to 3rd in the conference in scoring, conference only.

Griz are lucky to have Selvig. Great kid, good leader, and damn good basketball player. He does so many things well on the court that just go unnoticed by armchair/internet coaches. Next time you watch a game, dont just follow the ball, follow the game. You will learn to appreciate the finer points of Selvigs game should you see the big picture.

I could not agree more. I think Tinkle is becoming a great, not just good, coach at UM and every year that passes clearly demonstrates that. Yes, I think Selvig, like Ward, like DeShields, like the entire team, has a distinct role to play. He is not a bad person, not a bad student, a fine kid....don't know why so many read such hate from a few lines on the internet...He is simply not consistent and I often feel sorry for him more than you cheerleaders. he is what he is..a 7'2 obstacle to any offense, a good passer when he stays into the game, and can be a clutch 3 pt shooter, but often seems hesitant to do so. Fine...It is my opinion, and a couple of others that also pm me that the Griz at least "seem" better when he is on the bench...it is a different team...I personally think his biggest role as a senior leader works to UM's advantage...his mere presence. When those arms spread, hard to make a 3 pt shot....that being said, we all have opinions...the record speak for itself...unlike a lot of posters here, I never blame a college kid for a mistake or slip up in any game...if you choose to read things that way...your choice...

I got to watch the Griz play in Bozeman, and saw once again how much of an unconventional player Selvig is for a 7-footer. He isn't one to bang it around inside on offense, which you would like to see. But once you accept that, you can appreciate the other strengths he brings to the table.

The other teams are forced to put a big defender on him, because he can take advantage of small opponents. But he can make defenders who play too far off him pay by nailing the outside shot. He is a "pass first" kind of player -- almost to a fault. You can tell he loves to make a great pass more than he likes to make a make a basket. He's a consummate team player, really.

On defense, he can be slow to react, sometimes. But I also noted that he can also be pretty dogged and he really gums up the middle and changes a lot of shots. And, of course, he's been blocking a lot of shots.

Selvig may not be first team All Big Sky material, but he's pretty close to it. I'm glad we have him.

Good assessment. And as you noted, he is 7-ft--not 7'2" as a certain poster keeps wanting to say.

I will also say that anyone who thinks the Griz are better with Selvig on the bench isn't paying close enough attention or doesn't understand.

Note the inconsistency in a recent post where it is said that Tinkle is becoming a great coach, but apparently the poster thinks this great coach doesn't realize that the team is better when the player whom the coach played the 3rd most minutes last night is on the bench.
