UM vs. UNC

I got to watch the Griz play in Bozeman, and saw once again how much of an unconventional player Selvig is for a 7-footer. He isn't one to bang it around inside on offense, which you would like to see. But once you accept that, you can appreciate the other strengths he brings to the table.

The other teams are forced to put a big defender on him, because he can take advantage of small opponents. But he can make defenders who play too far off him pay by nailing the outside shot. He is a "pass first" kind of player -- almost to a fault. You can tell he loves to make a great pass more than he likes to make a make a basket. He's a consummate team player, really.

On defense, he can be slow to react, sometimes. But I also noted that he can also be pretty dogged and he really gums up the middle and changes a lot of shots. And, of course, he's been blocking a lot of shots.

Selvig may not be first team All Big Sky material, but he's pretty close to it. I'm glad we have him.

I think this is a pretty fair assessment. In my opinion, on of the reasons fans are so hard on him is because he is the highest rated recruit to sign at UM in a long, long time...maybe ever. Many thought he was a PAC10/Big12 type of player. I think Rivals had him as a 3 star recruit.

After a redshirt year and four years of playing, it doesn't appear he's lived up to his expectations from 5 years ago.

I like Selvig because he's an unconventional player, not in spite of it. It's gotta be a nightmare for opposing coaches to try to game plan against him. He's no Brian Qvale, that's for sure, but I like the way Tinkle plays to his strengths instead of trying to mold him into something he's not. This team will need some role players to really step it up to make it to the Dance, but I think they have the potential.

I agree with you regarding Selvig. I think Tinkle learned his lesson with Hasquet. After coach K left, it seemed as though Hasquet was almost forced under the hoop. While Hasquet held his own, it wasn't his style of game. Sometimes you have to let a shooter be a shooter.

A role player I see emerging, besides the usual suspects, is Henderson. He is seeing increased minutes. He just needs to clean up the BS, like the technical last night (I think Tinkle disagreed with the call).

Does anyone know if Tinkle has an additional scholly to offer for the upcoming season?? If Hutch doesn't improve, and Reader refuses to realize how fortunate he is to have a full ride scholarship, we will have one big man in that 7' true frosh. It would be nice if Tinkle went the JC route and obtained a 6'9" center ala Matt Williams, and let the new kid redshirt.

I get that Selvig is a divisive player.

His skill set is odd. He isn't nor was he ever a back to the basket guy. I really don't believe people would have many of the issues with his play if he were 6-5 versus 7-0. That being said, he is strangely passive at times and has a habit wilting away into the background. He isn't the player that is fully capable of transforming a game, but rather complimenting a star player or two.

More and more it is apparent that Will Cherry is blossoming into one heck of a player and maybe minus LK and MRR the best pro prospect the Griz have had. He has worked so hard to transform his game. He just isn't a drive and dash guy anymore. While Lillard is an offensive nightmare to handle, I'll take Cherry's ever evolving all court game.

Selvig "divisive" :?:.. If so, according to Merriam-Webster you've just labeled poor Derek as "creating disunity or dissension." Something going on with DS and his teammates? Don't think so.

I don't think AllWeather meant that Selvig is a divisive force on the team, but rather he can see how Selvig could divide fans on their opinion of him. At least, that's the way I read that.

Selvig is great. And as many have mentioned, the Griz are damn fortunate to have him.

Now, go get him a ring in his senior season!

Griz are lucky to have Selvig. Great kid, good leader, and damn good basketball player. He does so many things well on the court that just go unnoticed by armchair/internet coaches. Next time you watch a game, dont just follow the ball, follow the game. You will learn to appreciate the finer points of Selvigs game should you see the big picture.
