UM vs. MSU

Big weekend for round-ball.

Whats up with the Cats this year? Can a few of you fill me/us in on them? I choose not to look into that team too much until game time, but I do know they are not far behind in the standings.

From what I've been reading, much of their success is due to a group of jucos that are pretty good shooters from the perimeter. You've got to give Huse credit for getting quite a few wins out of players that haven't played much together before this year.

Here's a story that describes what's been happening, and maybe provides some clues as to what the Griz need to do to shut down the Cats:

we are a very interesting team this year. we have decent talent, and we are very athletic. we have stretches where we can really bring the defensive effort. huse does a great job mixing up our sets and we have had a lot of success playing a 1-3-1 zone and using our length and athleticism to create turnovers. it is not uncommon for us to go long stretches (5+ minutes) without allowing a point to be scored.

that said......we lack a go to scorer. and we desperately lack a perimeter shooter. reid has had his moments but he's not there yet. we just don't have a guy where when he puts the ball up....you'll bet money it's going in. so we go 5+ minutes without scoring a lot. in that psu game in which we came back to win, at one point psu went on like a 21-2 run. when the shots aren't falling we usually have 2-3 guys that try to take over and get to the basket. sometimes this works out....other times not so much.

the griz are the better team right now. you guys have much more balance. if the cats can make shots early, and more importantly make the wide open ones, this could be a good game. but i feel the cats need to play a near flawless game to win whereas the griz have more room for error. should be fun though. :thumb:

MSU has an incredibly streaky team this year. If MSU is shooting the lights out, they will win. If not, it will be a long day.

Also, this team has shown a propensity for going up by double digits and then forgetting how to shoot, pass, dribble, rebound...etc allowing lesser teams back into the game.

MSU can win, but UM should win due to being far more balanced and consistant.

this seems troublesome for a basketball team.....

At least the GRIZ are much more consistent offensively this year, compared to the previous few years. Defense is peaking at the perfect time too. Rebounding though needs a lot of work still.

On a side note, thanks to the contributing Cat fans here. It is so much nicer to have civil Cat fans post here, verses the out of control football forums, where even GRIZ fans are out of control too.

I agree 100%. Of course WBT and ILTC are good posters on the football board as well, but it's great to actually talk X's and O's.

+ one more.

As for the game, the griz D is very solid, and will contest each shot. I think the cats have to have a near perfect night from the 3 point territory to have a chance. The D is peaking right now..........KNOCK ON WOOD. :thumb:

Was it Budinich or Brumwell who has been hurt? Will they play? If so, will they have an impact??

Hello e-Griz. It's been a long time since I've been over here. ;)

I'm not sure if Brumwell is injured or not, but Budinich has had some decent minutes. He's a big guy that would be better suited to play on the perimeter. The center who was out this last week was Mohammed Fall. MSU's inside game hasn't had much offensive presence this year, and the top two scorers are guards Xavier Blount and Christian Moon. From a personal perspective, I still think I'm figuring out this year's Bobcat team, but so are a lot of us Bobcat fans. I've been pretty happy with conference season so far. I hope we can have a nice competitive game with you guys.

I'm also wondering how it's fair on the Griz basketball scheduling. The game starts a stretch of 4 games in 8 days for you guys...that just sucks. I'm hoping the Big Sky can fix the scheduling soon.

Also, the women's game looks to be pretty good as well. It should be a fun weekend of Cat-Griz basketball.

Yeah, strange schedule:
4th: @Cats
6th: ISU
9th: @UNC
11th: @Sac
12-22 1 game (Hawaii)
23: NAU
25: MSU
28: WSU

Yeah, I hope with the addition of new teams to the conference schedule next year that the schedule balances out. If the Griz survive this rather intense stretch I'll be impressed.

It isn't very fun for sure. Are there any other teams that are doing this/have already done this so far? At least the road games are winnable. But ending with home games is very nice as well.

The only other one I looked at was WSU, and their schedule is much more middle heavy. The last weekend they play the 23rd and the 28

Welcome back, Boz. Please post more often.

And yeah, the schedule is crazy-odd. I think the Griz are in the middle of 6 of 7 games on the road. During the conference season, that's nuts.

The GRIZ had better have defenders near Moon, all the time. The guy can shoot the rock! I hope we don't let him get it going like he has against ISU.
