UM vs. EWU

Just got back from Cheney and the game. Really tough loss for the Griz but it is hard to beat a team that shoots 12 for 19 from 3 (63%). AJ was very good this afternoon but Stauds was scoreless. The score was tied and the outstanding EWU freshman forced a shot and got a foul call that allowed them to win with 2 seconds left. The funny thing is some dillwad, over on the Eastern site, that wasn't even at the game was complaining about how the officials always call the game in favor of Montana when in this case they got a gift win on a call that most of the time is an obvious no-call. Prior to a questionable charge call on the eags with 30 seconds to play, an obvious travel by B. Moore was ignored by the referees. The point is, mistakes were made on both sides.

The attendance was about 2400 and the largest crowd of the season , bouyed by about 700 Griz fans. A guy was sitting right behind our section and heckling Tinks and our fans the entire game, as we were leaving he yelled that at least they (Griz) couldn't cheat there way to a win like in football. I really got pissed at that point and said we would be over next year and kick their ass on the new red turf and if he wished to discuss this matter further I would be willing...he demurred..

It is really sad to be a part of a league that in general is a d1 embarassment on most nights in terms of attandance and fan support.

This was a great game and was tight all the way to the end. Anthony Johnson is a stud and he single handly brought the Griz back. The Eags have had a very disappointing season so it was awesome to see them show some heart and pick up these two wins this weekend. I too thought that the game was fairly well officiated and calls went both ways. Heckling from fans is all part of the experience and its too bad that you let it get to you. Sorry that we embarass you with our attendance and fan support but we have three other division 1 basketball teams within a 80 mile radius and are not the only show in town. Go Eagles!!! :thumb:

Yeah, the call on AJ at the end sucked. The replay on altitude showed that there was no contact from him nor Qvale. Just sucks to have the ref decide the game at the end. Oh well, that's the breaks, I'm sure we will benefit from a crappy call at the end soon enough.

That said, Dean was a stud tonight. He's going to be a pain in the ass the next three years.

That guy and LillardMVP seem to have a lot of pent-up resentment.

It is going to be tough to win when we get zip offensively from Stauds, especially against a team that shoots lights out like EWU did. Stauds has been very effective lately and I doubt this performance (offensively) is going to be the norm for him. The Griz came out on fire in the 2nd half and built a decent lead. Then, they seemed to settle back (with the exception of AJ) into the performance that got them in a hole in the first half. I really have to wonder if McGillis is a 100%. He was a liability on the court and I was grateful when his 4th foul helped land him on the bench for the rest of the game. Games like this also make me worry about next season. Without AJ, we might have lost this one by 20.

Glad I wasn't the only one who said, "Good," at that point.

The replay on TV showed there was no foul on that last play, and AJ said as much in the Missoulian story -- though he was gracious in giving EWU credit for the win. On the other hand, there was no guarantee that the Griz would have won in overtime.

Also, Dean and the other Eagle freshman were impressive, and the Griz were pretty flat in the first half.

I must say, I admire AJ and the way he's played lately. He struggled for a while, and he said he was going to have to think about why that was happening. He did, and look at the results.

Anyone else wonder why tinks burned the final Time Out before the final free throw? Just seemed stupid to do that when EWU had the lead with 2.5 Seconds left. Basically, he made it easy for them to miss on purpose and then all we could do is hoist a prayer rather than grab the rebound, take a time-out, and draw up something better.

That would be very risky. Too much time may be lost from time of rebound and when the the time out is called. You have to have the play called during the last timeout which I am sure they did discuss it.

Too bad egriz was not working for this game. Now I have to post on my limited memory. I also thought McGillis was not right yet. Selvig was definitely not there mentally, which can happen to anyone, and it just happened to be this game. Stauds did not get enough shots to get warm. I seen a lot less screens and designed plays for him.

AJ was phenomenal, and his last foul was bs. No official should be blowing the whistle in the closing seconds unless it is an obvious call. At least that was what I learned in my few years of officiating. I was not there to see how Tinkle reacted to that call, but I would have been livid had a call like that gone against my team in that situation.

Was it me or did Cherry seem less aggressive offensively than the last 1/2 dozen games?

As for Tinks calling a timeout when he did, I too wondered why he chose then without any other timeouts left? I could see it with 2 timeouts left, one to freeze the shooter, the other to set up a better play. I would think before the 2nd FT is shot to tell the nearest official you will call a time out on a rebounded miss, or if the shot is made to call a T.O upon the ball being inbounded, or whatever the coaching intentions are.

As it turned out the GRIZ had to rely on desperation shot. At least with a timeout after the FT, you have time to set up a designed play to free a few up. It still would have been a desperate shot, but with solid strategy to execute it. In this case there was no strategy involved other than to heave it up. The whole timeout situation just does not make sense to me. I wonder if someone gave Tinkle inaccurate information or he was so caught up in the moment he was not thinking clearly? That call just seems so unlike Tinkle at this stage as a coach.

As for the loss, like every loss it was disappointing, but one that can be used for motivation and refocus again for the team. I honestly see the GRIZ with Weber State right now as the best 2 BSC teams. Sorry
UNC.

The final 2 games will be telltale games. Here is going 2-0 to end the regular season and winning the BSC championship.

Oh yeah, I fully believe that they drew up a play, but if he misses the free throw it's hard to get the rebound exactly where you want it to set up a play. Good thing I am not a coach, though, because if I was on the sidelines last night, the Griz would have been destroyed by 30!

I wonder like another poster who is going to make the shots next year when AJ is gone. We have around twenty points to fill for each game and late in the games when our offense stalls, AJ goes one on one and takes the shot or gets to the foul line. Currently I don't see anybody on the team that can come close to filling his role. Who picks up the slack next year? Qvale,Selvig, Cherry,Young or a newcomer. Let me know your thoughts.
