UM vs CPSLO games have always been entertaining

I'm really looking forward to tomorrows game, mostly because when UM and CPSLO meet up, the games are usually instant classics.

2011: Griz win 37-23. Poly led 17-14 at the half and had a 20-14 lead in the 3rd. The Griz made it 29-20 at the end of the 3rd and put the game out of reach with 8 min left to go.

2010: Poly wins 35-33. Griz played super sloppy and Poly's backup QB came in and torched the secondary. Griz were down 35-20 and tried to rally but fell short.

2009: Griz win 35-23. Montana was down 17-7 but exploded in the 4th qtr to put the game away. Marc Mariani had a huge game with two long TD receptions.

2008: Griz win 30-28. Poly was heavily favored against a Griz team that was gutted thanks to the graduation of a ton of talent. The Griz came from behind, down 21-14 to win the game thanks to Poly missing a fieldgoal wide left with just 43 seconds left in the game.

2006: Griz win 10-9. The Mustangs came to Missoula in a defensive struggle of a game as each team had some of the top ranked defensive statistics in the FCS. This was one of my more favorite games in Wa Griz, not sure why, just an oddity to see such a defensive battle. Poly was up 6-0 at the half, the Griz grabbed the lead on a Ryan Bagley TD reception 7-6 in the 3rd. With 3:56 left in the game Poly kicked a fieldgoal to grab a 9-7 lead but then the Griz went on a 3:51 length drive with Dan Carpenter kicking a game-winning fieldgoal with just 5 seconds left in the game.

Bobby Hauck after the game: "Dan's got a flair for the dramatic," said Montana coach Bobby Hauck. "He's always wanted to make a game-winner. I guess he did it."

2005: Poly wins 35-21. In their 2nd matchup Poly finally got revenge for a string of losses in Wa Griz, and to make it even sweeter the win came in the playoffs. Poly's defense shut the Griz down and rattled RS frosh Cole Bergquist, meanwhile Poly RB James Noble ran for 188 yards and 4 TDs. (This was Poly's 1st win ever against the Griz).

2005: Griz win 36-27. I remember this game being a very physical, I think we had multiple players get knocked out of this game, including Cole Bergquist. Looking at the old box score the Griz had 4 turnovers in the 3rd qtr but still hung on to win, mostly on the back of Lex Hilliard and his 237 rushing yards.

2003: Griz win 17-14. A back and forth game where Poly held a 14-10 lead until 13:00 left in the 4th qtr when a Lex Hilliard TD set the final score, that TD was set up by a fake field goal that converted a 4th and 1 attempt.

2001: Griz win 31-17. Griz won @ Poly to start off their national title-earning season.

Great stuff BW. I always liked CPSLO games because of the unique offense they have. All those games felt like like playoff games. Griz fans never knew how those games would turn out and Poly was always tougher than 3/4 of the BSC teams.

There have been some classic battles from 2003 on. Glad to finally be in the same great conference as Montana. Hopefully we can get a few more of those close ones to fall our way.

2008 had to be Schmidt's greatest game EVER. I had forgotten about the punt block he had in addition to the great game @ RB. It's a little fuzzy but I seem to remember thinking he was a pleasent surprise for that game, but i think he got hurt in it (or soon thereafter) and then Chase basically took over and never looked back (?). I also seem to remember being somewhat concerned that Chase would be our RB because Schmidty was banged-up. HA!

Add another classic game between these two teams (since 2003). Looking forward to seeing the Griz in SLO next year.

Great game. Cal Poly's line play was superior to ours the entire game. In hindsight, we should have passed 50 times today.

Looking forward to seeing Cal Poly in Missoula THIS December. That is a playoff team Graves is a game changer for the Mustangs and that defense is solid

In fact I think you use to have a picture of Bags making an amazing catch on 4th Down to set up Carpenter's kick in 2006. I was on the field that game standing by Carpenter, and he was so ready to get that kick, it was amazing when we won that one, people went crazy on the field . . .

CP is a great addition to the Big Sky.

This game was magical. Can't believe the blocked field goal, wow. Never stop playing.

You might be mixing it up with this absolutely clutch Bagley catch against EWU, probably one of the 3 most amazing catches in Griz history:

EDIT:
Nevermind. You were right. Bagley converted a 4th-and-13 on the game winning drive against Poly in 2006. I couldn't find anything on Youtube, but it's mentioned here:

The refs gave him 13 yards, but he did not gain 13 yards. He caught it just past the first down marker and ran backwards two yards to try to avoid the tackle and make more yards and was tackled there. The refs incorrectly gave him forward progress and the first down. Game should have been over and Cal Poly should have won, but like I said early good teams find a way to win and do not let one bad call by the refs effect the outcome of the game.

Like I also said yesterday I would say that the a Griz got lucky yesterday, but I have seen them do it too many times to call it lucky. They dug down deep and pulled out a win in a game they were outplayed for 58 minutes. This game, the game in 2006 and the game in 2008 really sting as a Mustang fan and leave you saying would of, could of and should of. Congrats to the Griz for once again playing 60 minutes of football and once again finding a way to win. Impressive.

On the bright side as a Cal Poly fan I really think we found a QB that will win a lot if games over the next 2 1/2 years.

Best of luck the rest of the season and just maybe if the Mustangs can regroup we can see you again in December.

That is the pic from the Eastern game, and I thought there was another. He clearly had the first down :coffee:

And you are clearly wearing maroon colored glasses. He ran back behind the first down marker trying to avoid the tackle on his own and was tackled. No forward progress or first down should have been given. Game over. If I had a dollar for every Griz fan that told me that was a bad call after the game I would be able to retire early, but like I said good teams find a way to win and that was just another example of the a Griz doing just that.

I remember the play in 2006. Happened right in front of me. When Bagley jumped backwards to try to create more space the whole stadium let out an audible groan. He was stopped a yard short, the Griz lucked out big time as the refs gave him forward progress. If there were the opportunity to challenge a spot at the FCS level Poly would have won the game on a challenge.
