UM to NAIA?

Raider said:
Why not? They are already recruiting to the NAIA level anyway. This would allow us to land more players from "good Griz families"

Sarcastic smartass! That was GOOD! :thumb:

Where do you think those 3 schools are going?

UM has played CW 3 times in last 15 years.
I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but the landscape of college football is changing. I don’t know for certain where they could go, but it’s likely that opportunity will knock.

As far as CW goes, that’s why I said “the likes of….”

Do some reading. There seem to be no likely openings for teams in the West. FBS is consolidating, not opening up for FCS schools.

Utah Tech plays MSU and Colorado St. this fall. UT was down only 20-28 late in the 3d quarter to BYU last fall. UT lost to Sam Houston by only 3 last fall, I believe.

The west is absolutely going to have some changes. Either the PAC 4 poaches from the MW or they join to form a new conference. Colter spoke about it a few times on his podcast, potentially the coastal schools forming one division and the schools in the Rockies forming another.

Nobody knows what the changes are going to be…..I’m just saying that I hope we are ready to embrace them and have the opportunity to raise the bar.

Got it. I think UM has been preparing by upgrading facilities for almost 20 years and keeping its eyes open.

The west is going from 2 FBS conference to 1 FBS conference. I don't see any FCS schools being included. The media money doesn't exist currently for 2.

Much of this hasn’t been determined yet. Don’t jump the gun!

It actually has based on the TV money. Reason the PAC failed is because the only tv money they could muster up was an inferior package from Apple. I can't even see Apple offering the same with a much weaker PAC12 Conference. The networks threw extra cash at the Big 10 and Big 12 for the new schools so the existing schools didn't have to take a smaller cut.

But let's assume that a secondary FBS conference does form in the west, how much would the Media deal need to be to cover the increased expenses to move up for UM? It is probably more than what the MWC deal currently is, maybe even 2X. Is that TV money available?

The more I read your posts it appears that you are a member of the in the know group. Maybe on the negative side, but in the know. Almost to the point of thinking you are in the administration……or previous administration?

I am still waiting to read a post where you provide 3-4 real world sources for the millions of dollars it would require for UM to make a move to FBS.

PAC-12 turned down $30 million per year from ESPN. With USC and UCLA going. Countered with $50 million. ESPN said goodbye. The money then went elsewhere. Then came plan B, apple.

Why don’t we stick to the topic in question?
In other words “UM to NAIA”
No question the times they are a changing. I can just see some Washington politicians calling for an investigation into the demise of the PAC 12 and the Feds will muck up the whole thing.

Without having any insight into the who’s and where’s I wonder if Kent had any forewarning to the realignment? Personally I feel unless significant changes happen to FBS realignment in the next couple of years the Griz chance of moving up are pretty much nonexistent, sorry to say.
But we do carry a certain amount of weight in FCS with our strong fan base and past reputation. Again, without knowing all the under the covers dialogue going on I think the two strongest conferences, the Summit and the BSC need to weed out the weak sisters and create a East and West Division. The sooner this can be done then at least we can secure ourselves a spot at the table. If the FBS can realign why can’t the FSC?

Why not FCS in the Big Sky conference? Why try to be too big for your britches? Why try to outkick your coverage? Why try to be something you ain’t? What’s wrong with being happy where you are? Why spend your time complaining? Why not know a good thing when you see it? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. What’s wrong with setting season ticket records?
Because SDSU, NDSU, and MSU won’t say no if they get the opportunity. Do we want to look like Washington State and Oregon state after the rest of the PAC left them in the dust? There needs to be an appetite for stronger competition….fortunately it looks like there is.

Do we want to continue playing the likes of Utah Tech, Central Washington, and Northern Colorado every year?

Do you enjoy listening to that empty suit that we call “commissioner” complain about needing 17 camera angles to make the correct call? I don’t.

Don’t get me wrong, I think that we are still in the right place AS OF RIGHT NOW. But that could change very quickly. I think that the legitimately of the FCS is dependent on high end “brands”….and right now the only schools that qualify are the Montana and Dakota schools. Maybe Delaware. If the opportunity arises to leave with those other schools….there has to be an appetite.

MSU won't say no? I remember the years that the Griz were seriously considering a move up and the frequently ask question was " What about the bobcats?"
So now if MSU is asked to move up will we hear " What about the Griz?" How would that play out ?

I would hope that the BOR will allow MSU to move up if they are given the opportunity. There doesn’t appear to be any interest at UM, nor do we have the finances. We know that North Dakota State hopes to move up which will further weaken the FCS, but we would still have Utah Tech and Northern Colorado as our competition.

I agree. You are right-on. I know both Montana ADs have their eyes open and watching closely. But, right now both Montana schools are in a good place.

Maybe UM can join the Texas High School Association.
