"I just loved Missoula. It's kind of like a small Boise," he said. "It feels like it's somewhat like home. And they have the most support out of any FCS school in the country. It's absolutely ridiculous."
The Grizzlies, a Football Championship Subdivision power, is without a full-time coach after the firing of Robin Pflugrad and investigations into the football program by the NCAA and federal law enforcement officials.
"He felt so strongly about the school and his feelings and the fit, he didn't want to wait around," said Todd Simis, his father and the Capital High coach.
Makena Simis said the issues with the program did not bother him.
"As long as they have a good season, they'll keep the same coaching staff," he said. "And if they don't, there's going to be coaches lined up. It's the best FCS program you can go to."
