UM taking Lider to Wyoming

I've got a feeling we'll be cycling through a few kickers this season. What's interesting is the latest article on Lider getting the job talks about him missing kicks while Greenberg and Sullivan were making them, on the last day at least.

Yes. Coach is thinking experience is more important than accuracy at this point. Get the others more real game experience and I agree with you - we'll see another kicker - unless Lider surprises us all.

All I'm gonna say is if this game does come down to a missed field goal, ie we have the chance to win it with a field goal with one second left and Lider misses it, it's not gonna be pretty around here. Also, if he does make it, he'll become a hero. I hope he becomes that second scenario! :thumb:

What if , according to the article, "something drastic" happens in the coming week? Why couldn't MD make a switch?

True he could make a switch. I also just thought about this question... Is Delaney going to bring a backup kicker in case Lider for some freak reason has an injury during the game? It would be extremely awkward to not have a replacement kicker at all if the only one he brings along goes down. *Knock on wood*

Things may have changed since I played for MD in the 60's but loyalty and tenacity means a lot to him. Unless there was a drastic difference in the kickers I would have expected this decision just because he came back and hung in there. Its as much a message for the whole team as anything. Doesn't mean after giving him the chance, he won't cut him off at the knees after being given the chance.

Along the same lines not starting Sullivan at Wyoming may be a compassionate move considering the way he was treated after fighting to come back from his stroke.

PR of course left out this tidbit: “But I don’t want to have a kicker who they think has a short hook on them and you’re going to jerk them out of there as soon as something goes wrong. Right now one of our guys (Greenberg) has never competed in a college football game and one (Sullivan) has been away for two years, so we’re going to have to put them in some game situations here the next few weeks to see really where we think we’re at.”

Sullivan appears to have the strongest leg when lining up in field goal situations. He probably gives the Griz the best shot to hit from 50 yards or more. But Lider has had fewer knuckle balls the last three weeks.

And, of course, TNT doesn't realize that my post linked 2 articles on kickers, including the one he just linked.

I would imagine on a road trip that Shaw would step in, in an emergency. They may also be some other players on the roster who kicked in high school or played soccer or owned a particularly disobedient cat than could do the job.

You mean the smoke article about wilson that you tried to use to build up sullivan and knock Lider? I realize the case you were trying to build and how you were using correct information in a misleading manner. Classic PR

Meh, not impressed. Half of what's wrong with our kicking game are the coaching decisions being made in it.

If I recall correctly, it seems Sullivan has been the one with the best looking kicks and it's been Greenberg who has been the most accurate though there isn't much difference between the two.

Why Line Drive Lider was chosen as the starter is beyond me... just another questionable coaching decision among many IMO.

We shall see

I quoted and linked 2 articles. The one you linked saying Lider would go to Wyoming, and the Wilson article, which contained the following quote (which I included):

"Early in practice Lider missed from 42 yards with a swirling wind. Sullivan and Harrison Greenberg hit from that distance and the former showed off his superior leg strength.

When the kickers took the field for a second time, all three hit from 38 yards with Sullivan showing the most lift. They moved back to 40 where Lider had his kick blocked, Sullivan was wide left and Greenberg knocked it through off the upright. Later Lider, Sullivan and Greenberg all hit from 43 yards."

Surprised you were not able to find these quotes in the Wilson article. It says that Lider missed 2 kicks, and the other kickers made all of their kicks. Now, let's year your apology.

I found them, same quotes in the Kicker article referring to a single practice. I'm surprised you left this one out:

Right now one of our guys (Greenberg) has never competed in a college football game and one (Sullivan) has been away for two years, so we’re going to have to put them in some game situations here the next few weeks to see really where we think we’re at.”

Doesn't sound at all like hes made a decision beyond the wyoming game. but then unless you leave that out, you can't claim to have brilliant analysis when he make the final decision

From what I heard, the coaches did not even think Greenberg was an option a couple day ago and it was going to boil down to either Lider or Sullivan. I am not sure what criteria they based their decision on.

Guys come on know. Easy easy solution to how this was determined. All three kickers lined up on the 30 at the same time. Rock , Paper, Scissors and the kicker was selected!

Next week same time, same place, same game!

Week three Dynamite thrown in to mix it up!!

This whole thread is old news. I posted it yesterday in Wahlberg's "post fall camp and 2014 outlook" thread. :thumb:
