UM Griz vs. Northern Colorado Game Thread

Griz stay unbeaten in Big Sky behind Akoh’s effort

https://skylinesportsmt.com/griz-stay-unbeaten-in-big-sky-by-outlasting-bears/

What was a pretty good game turned into an absolute shit show after the tripple technical debacle! You could just feel our team clinging onto the lead for dear life after that! Really glad they were able to clamp down and exit with the win. This game will make them mentally tougher, for sure. Impressive that they won it by shooting 2s to NCU's 3s. Good win regardless of the ref interference.

I love this post. Nine posts into the game thread and LA nails the essence of the game. I was at the game, west side centercourt. The three-point flop call was outrageous. You literally could have parked Akoh between the shooter and defender. No contact of any kind was made, as the replay showed over and over. The tie up with Tim Falls was another joke. Neither player wanted to release the other and it should have been a double foul. The associated technicals (2 on us, 1 on them) just called attention to the fact that the refs were indecisive. The 10 minute game delay was absolute incompetence. The refs, right below me, appeared to be watching Family Guy reruns on the monitor. Three quick angles shown on the Griz vision showed everything you needed to see in 30 seconds. The refs should have given themselves technicals for missing the glaringly obvious shooting foul against Akoh late in the game when it mattered. But they let us all know they were in charge by repeatedly calling off-ball, ultra ticky tack stuff on both teams when no advantage had been gained. That just killed the flow of the game in the second half. It was my first game of the season in person. Takeaways are that this is a super athletic and balanced Griz team. Last night is was Akoh, but so many weapons are available with this team. NoCol has BIG TIME shooters. Little Rocket Man would be proud of their launch range. The new Griz Vision replays video is fantastic. Now the crowd can see in full color exactly how each foul call actually went down. Fans can see when the refs get it right. And when they get wrong.

The foul call just north of mid-court on the east side on Timmy Falls was a horrible call too, and was shown to be wrong on the video. The offensive player ran right over Falls, who was planted in perfect position.

The 2 white refs were particularly horrible, especially in the second half. The black seemed okay to me.

Crowd was over 4100, so better. Crowd got into in several times. There is no excuse for not having 5,000 or more at every game. The team is good and very athletic and entertaining. Huge fun.

Bodnar was at the game again, with his family. Talked to the band again. I think the band was supplemented by alums.

Nicholas seemed to get down in himself in the first half, and it continued. Don't know why. He was great on Thurs. and is going to be a great player. Already an important contributor.

Bobby Moorehead continued his strong play, and he got lots of minutes, despite scoring only 3 points total in the 2 games.

Terrific free throw shooting. 85% in each half.

Good game, Griz. We couldn't handle the big guy's inside game. I thought UNC hung in there and played tough but you were the better team last night. Hopefully the Bears can make it even when you travel to Greeley.

Showed him on the feed when Monte was next to him. Son on his lap. Genuinely seemed to be enjoying himself and not just there to show his face.
Agree with the referee statement. 1 guy was better, yet collectively subpar.
I was thinking Nicholas seemed to be playing and maybe not feeling well. As you said, just didn’t seem “right”
I was just hoping the free throws continued to fall since the percentage seemed very high, and as you said, 85 each half is excellent!
Very fun game to watch, other than the fiasco that is big sky refs. Wish I lived closer and could watch live regularly. Keep it up gentlemen, and we may see a tourney birth!

Why is ANYONE surprised when the officiating in this conference is horrible? It is horrible EVERY DAMN GAME, football or basketball.

The only thing that is surprising is that this conference refuses to do anything about it.

Wait. That's not at all surprising either. #GETUSTHEHELLOUTOFTHEbsc

Thanks BSB. The Bears are going to be right there for certain. The easy win over ewoo spoke volumes.

I am curious to see your detailed plan on how the BSC can improve officiating.

Certainly. As soon as I receive an enormous paycheck from the member universities for doing my job, I'll post it on here.

Bodnar was also on the screen during the bongo drum segment (where drums are put on screen in front of fans, and fans are expected to pretend they are playing the drums). Bodnar participated.

:thumb: Agreed. Always enjoy fraternal comments by followers of other teams (WSU's oldrunner, NAU follower MT Jack, sacstatesman) that display mutual regard for the game and the competition. The Big Sky is shaping up to be quite a brouhaha this year & it's great to see forum comments that keep it all in good competitive perspective.

None of UNC's bigs will ever be able to stop Akoh, unless the coach decides to double team. Even then, they will have trouble defending him. Krslovich could also score on your bigs. But Akoh is a beast, being very strong, great jumping, and seemingly every move, right or left, from the low post. He's a good passer too and gets a lot of assists. If teams double team, then Akoh will kick out or dump to the slasher coming to the hoop. Your bigs are not strong enough, physically.

But for the ref fiasco and delay, which gave UNC a lot of points and really took away UM's momentum, I think UM would have won by 25 or more.

In conference play, Akoh is 4th in scoring (22.8) and rebounding. I see that Rorie is first in free throw percentage, 14-14.

Rather, everything. You see, I have a job. It does not involve finding and training competent officials. The fat cats at the bsc also have jobs. Oddly, those jobs DO involve finding and training competent officials. If you fail to see that, I simply can't help you. But my belief is you're just a troll, and really suck at it.

That said, I have plenty of ideas for how officiating can be brought up to at least a shitty level in this conference, but the concepts are far too complex for you, so I won't waste my time attempting to explain them to you.

My understanding is that the best refs move on to conferences that pay more than the Big Sky. My impression is that the pool of qualified refs may not be large in comparison to the number of refs needed for games. Don't know about that last sentence, tho. My Pac-12 friends complain about poor riffing at that level too.

Basketball officiating isn't easy. Coaches and crowds are demanding. There is lots of video, at games and on tv. I wouldn't want to do it even at the high school level.

Exactly, low pay and rugged travel. The good ones move onto better jobs in bigger conferences. Simple as that.
