When Alabama takes on Clemson in the Sugar Bowl Monday in New Orleans, a pair of Butte natives will play a prominent, yet unmentioned role.
A referee crew from the Pac-12 will oversee the game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. That crew includes Butte natives Joe Johnston and Dan Antonietti
Johnston, who lives in Missoula, will serve as an official on the field during the game. Antonietti, of Spokane, Washington, will be the replay official.
Johnston and Antonietti are both graduates of the University of Montana. Johnston graduated from Butte High in the late 1980s, while Antonietti graduated from Butte Central in the early 1970s.
The 84th Sugar Bowl will kick off at 6:45 p.m. (Mountain Time) on ESPN.
The game is part of the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship. The winner will take on the winner of Monday’s Rose Bowl game between Oklahoma and Georgia in the national championship game Jan. 8 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
