When Alabama takes on Clemson in the Sugar Bowl Monday in New Orleans, a pair of Butte natives will play a prominent, yet unmentioned role.

A referee crew from the Pac-12 will oversee the game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. That crew includes Butte natives Joe Johnston and Dan Antonietti

Johnston, who lives in Missoula, will serve as an official on the field during the game. Antonietti, of Spokane, Washington, will be the replay official.

Johnston and Antonietti are both graduates of the University of Montana. Johnston graduated from Butte High in the late 1980s, while Antonietti graduated from Butte Central in the early 1970s.

The 84th Sugar Bowl will kick off at 6:45 p.m. (Mountain Time) on ESPN.

The game is part of the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship. The winner will take on the winner of Monday’s Rose Bowl game between Oklahoma and Georgia in the national championship game Jan. 8 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Know them both. Graduated the same year as Dan, but from Butte High. Then went to U of M at the same time.

Cool, grizzbud.

I just know Johnston (Jiggers). I graduated Butte High with him, he was a member of the AA state championship wrestling team that won it for the 10th year in a row. He placed 2nd individually, at 125 lbs that year.

Lots of Missoulians probably know him, he lives there and worked at the Bodega back in the day... Fun guy.

Here he (Johnston) is in the 2012 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans:

 Says the B on the back of his referee uniform stands for Butte (not Back Judge). He loves the state of Montana (as well all do).

Thanks Intuitive, :thumb:

Jiggs is a great guy. Rumors are that he could be in line to move up to The Show in the near future.

If anyone cares - he's in the very back of the D with a big B on his back - the back judge

He threw the flag and made a great PI call in the end zone right before halftime.

Saw him a bunch of times on tv, because I was looking for him. Pretty cool deal..

I didn't know you knew him, sweet... small world.
