Thanks for all the updates, much appreciated. GREAT way to start conference play by beating the two teams picked ahead of you preseason. Wish Lillard was healthy for this one, though.

BTW, what was the reported attendance and how was the crowd?

4606....Decent crowd...for another afternoon Matinee..

What was the attendance wednesday?

the early afternoon games drive me insane....but i gotta say i'm very surprised at the attendance #'s we've been getting. Just goes to show that people are starting to realize what an exciting team we have. The last 3 home wins will only build on that. :thumb:

I still think I am most impressed with the fact that Tinkle's teams are finally showing up for the big games! I know, I know, they did well in the BSC tourney last year, but even last year with a packed house Vs. the scats the Griz mailed it in. This years team is just brimming with confidence and it's so good to see that on any night one of the first 6 (or 7) can give the team a spark. The Griz don't have to rely on an AJ coming out at half promising to take the game over.

Is it too early to say this team is one of the two best (along with LK's second year) teams since 1992?
That is my thought. We drove over from Helena to watch this game. In fact, if it was a night game I would not have been able to make it. So, I am extremely impressed with just about every component imaginable, and think Tinks has matured tremendously as a coach. And I think it is a lot better team than last year because everyone expected Johnson to do his thing. It is much more of a team this year. Also, I hope Autry stays because I think he has some talent and will contribute before the seasons over.

Of course if we had AJ at the deuce this year we would be watching the most dangerous mid-major team in the country and by far the best Griz team of all time. Can you imagine what our scoring average would be? I'll be an old man before UM has a SG of Johnson's caliber again.

Credit Tinkle for finally hitting his stride, but AJ is the reason we're even talking about this team or Tinkle in such a positive light right now. AJ did for Griz hoops what Dave Dickenson did for the football program in the 90's. He put us back on the map ten fold over what the Krysko teams accomplished.

And why wouldn't Autry not stay?

That Weebs board is a joke. The comments ended as soon as the game was out of hand. Expect more of that. There season in OVER!!! "We're a basketball school first". No, your football team is a joke, so no one follows it, and as soon as your basketball team is irrelevent, you'll attend more Tabarnacal Choir concerts instead of watching a sinking ship. If there was any doubt after Lillard went down it is now clear. Weber looked pathetic. They will be lucky to not be one of the 2 teams not in the playoffs. Rastatter went out of his way to screw the Griz. Tinkle was so pissed at Rastetter. You guys didn't even watch the game. Talk about clueless. There's always next year, Weber. buh-bye Now!

A solid win, even without Lillard they're an agressive squad but you can tell they just don't seem to have someone leading the charge out there. When they got within 5 or 6 it was looking like a tight 2nd half but a few demoralizing shots from the Griz completely knocked Weebs out.

Cherry was sluggish shooting overall today (compared to Wednesday) but I've got to say the more I watch him the more I like, the behind-the-back pass/assist in the 1st half and the no-look pass/assist to BQ in the 2nd were beautiful. He also made the Weber guards look they had cement shoes on at times, great quickness on him.

Selvig has to be enjoying the fact that teams either double/triple BQ or try to jam up Cherry to prevent him from spreading them out, he gets mis-matches all game long and this week to major advantage of it. I'm thinking with the two wins that Selvig will probably get player of the week for the conference, combining the two games he's had 39 points, 5 assists, and 13 rebounds.

Great game, ok atmosphere. Kind of a weird game, Weber seemed into it all the way, even when Montana was pulling ahead. they are very physical, and it seemed like it was being called differently on each end of the court - touch fouls when Weber had the ball, anything goes when Montana had it, then a couple of bad make-up calls when tinkle complained enough. Weird, you just really want consistency in the officiating, during the game and from game to game. however I think the physical game was a plus for the Griz, Weber was tired down the stretch.

Crowd number surprised me. I was thinking there were more there Wednesday than Friday, but it it tough to tell. I know there was more there for Oregon State though, so I am calling BS on the 4600 number. that was a CYA number for scheduling afternoon games. I am convinced they make up the attendance number, like most anything that comes out of the AD at Montana it is hard to believe anything they say anymore.

I agree on Autry, he can be a very good player when he gets on the same page with the rest of the team - reminds me a lot of Virgil Mathews his first year here. If he can grow the same way Virgil did by next year he will be a beast.

I hate to say it, but the best part of the whole game was when Mackerel Jordan ate the "coach" and spit him out in his boxers. Yea they are freaky and weird and cheap laughs, and the basketball was good, but that made my day I laughed so hard. So some props to the marketing department for that one.

Still in awe.

Tinkle recruited Johnson to UM, though, so you can't extract and separate his impact on UM basketball from Tinkle's. That's like saying Florida's football success is more a result of Tim Tebow than Urban Meyer. They're the same thing. I imagine that Tinkle played a role in convincing Selvig to secure a scholarship to Mrs. Johnson and that was more than the coaches at Boise State, Portland State, etc were willing to do. It sounds like Tinkle wanted him more and there's a lot of credit due for spotting a diamond in the rough and polishing it up and letting it shine.

But I think Will Cherry is going to have a bigger role in the resurgence of the Griz Basketball program than Johnson for the simple fact that he's a four-year player and not a JuCo transfer. It seems like with the last several Griz teams, when we finally get really good play from a guard like Cherry right now, it's a JC guy that fans aren't very familiar with, and he's only get about 15 games left in his career. There's so much turnover with the two-year players that players are gone by the time they are really getting comfortable with the team and fans are really getting on board.

Look at the attendance this preseason, it's obviously not going to sell a lot of season tickets when the impression is that we have a one-man team and that one man is gone. Four years of consistent exciting play from a star guard is going to be much more significant than one great year. A star freshman point-guard also helps recruiting big time. Players want to play 3 years with a guy like that, and I think Cherry had a big part in landing Jamar. Hopefully the success continues.

Hey guys, bunch of New Years goodies for ya'all at the website.

Highlights of the game in our recap: http://www.nbcmontana.com/keci-sports/26335558/detail.html

Plus, on the main sports page video viewer, I've posted complete postgame interviews with the Griz, and there are still highlights up from the NAU win: http://www.nbcmontana.com/keci-sports/index.html

Happy New Year, and if ya haven't gotten out to Dahlberg, dont miss out in 2011. This team is starting to round into a complete team. The depth on this team is stunning. Now its not just Cherry and Qvale. Still a long way to go, but I'll call my shot right now-if this team gets to the dance, they're going to win at least one game, and they've got potential to be the Northern Iowa-type sleeper.

Damn - Montana is looking SOLID!
That is so true...but the good news is 80% from the line and a solid defense which is the hall mark for this team....best well rounded team I can remember at UM in decades! Great coaching, great players, great team work, and growing crowds! Now, if they can find an outlet that out of town fans can rely on...
Amazing how much the coaching has improved now that we have thoroughbreds in the stable... :thumb:
This coach has created this team...Most of us here, knew Tinks would be ok....now, can UM keep him?

I think Missoula is his home. I get the impression that this is the job that he really wants to keep for quite a while and doesn't want to move. However I don't think he could turn down a high-profile PAC-10 job should the opportunity arise. I will not be surprised to see a new contract for him here before the start of the next season.

To those of you questioning the attendance yesterday, there were WAY more people at the game on Friday than on Wednesday. I questioned the Wed. attendance, but have no problem at all with the posted attendance for yesterday.
