I know we can blitz but is that a consistent way to get effective pressure without losing something in run/pass coverage? If agressive blitzing is the best option, would it likely be from a certain position group? Safeties? Linebackers?
Define 4 man front. We almost always bring 4 men. Just usually our DE/LB hybrid comes from a stand up and we often run a stunt. I think it’s misguided that we don’t get pressure. Often times watching replays our line was forcing the QB to step backward within a 2 seconds of the ball. Also note that teams started using quick passes and roll pockets vs us. I expect much of the same vs UCD. We are gonna see quicker passes and roll pockets. We are gonna bring pressure in the A and B gaps and hope to push him to one side of the field. Their OL is good but not all world. If we can take away their run...I think that will be the most important. Make them just throw and let our safeties play over the top. If they have to cheat hard down to save the run..then we’re screwed up top. I also think we will see some exotic stuff this game that we have not seen yet this year from our D. We have been pretty bland in our coverages so far. I expect us to throw some wrinkles out there and try and catch UCD sleeping a little bit
Very good explanation.
People have to be careful when they look at stats like yardage given up, there are a couple of things that can inflate those numbers. In the case of the Griz D this year, our run stop has been so good that teams are having to throw a lot. If a team is grinding out 300 on the ground they don't have to throw so pass D looks really good in terms of yardage surrendered. The same happens when a team can't run. Add to that except for Oregon we've been playing from the front and with big leads by midway through the 3rd quarter so teams have to throw because they don't have time left to grind it out.
Then also there is how quick our offence goes; if we are in hurry up which we do a lot, it means our TOP won't be as high which gives the other team more time to run more plays which means more yards.
All this doesn't mean the Griz pass D doesn't need to improve, it just means sometimes there is more to numbers than "they good, we bad".
