UC Davis Aggies scouting report

A couple stats in Brint’s report that jumped out about UCD are 42% of their scoring and 27 points of offense per game. Cal and NDSU remained patient. They didn’t panic when USD started fast even San Diego weathered the storm.
USD has a great D-line the defense overall is athletic but undersized and will wear down. They get to the QB and cause turnovers.
UM personnel held up to Oregon, the offense didn’t maintain drives at Oregon.
Two keys for Griz this week patience and sustained drives.
Giving up yards won’t defeat the Griz, turnovers and giving up TDs will.
Mallory effect could be key, his low center of gravity, size, and attitude. For the first time in years the O-line can get a good push on run plays. Knight is also a upgrade this year. UM has been better this year in TOP and scores 34 points per game. Patience, controlling the clock, and ball security.
Some have been expecting a shootout. I would be surprised to see more than 55-60 total points scored. UCD has come off a tough road game and the Griz have to travel, look for a similar first half as Monmouth and Griz. Hope the good guys can win this one.

I too am unsold on this defense. I think they rank near to last in the fcs for pass defense. 117 out of 126 teams or something like that. Just putrid stats in the passing game. If I remember correctly Baer was heavily scrutinized and may have been let go somewhere due to his defense giving up record breaking yards in the passing game. I’d have to do some digging to find the article, but remember reading it when he was brought on and I was researching the guy. I love the intensity the defense plays with, just not sold on the scheme and it’s effectiveness

I, for one, an very pleased with the defensive play this year as compared to last year! We have faced some of the best overall passing teams in the country in both FCS & FBS all, (except USD), with veteran offensive lines. There is speculation that all 5 offensive lineman for Oregon will be drafted.

With the exception of Oregon the Grizzlies are winning by over 20 pts per game! Admittedly a lot of that comes from both offense and special teams proficiency. But, a good deal of that also comes from opportune defensive play.

The Griz have a good shot at winning this game. I believe the defense will have a great game this week, and the Griz win by 9 points or better. I also think it is going to be a lower scoring game than most are predicting, with the winner being at or under 30 points.

This is a historical question. Can anyone name the most famous UC-Davis football player ever? I can honestly say i guessed it before researching (he's the only UC-Davis grad I could name off the top of my head) and I confirmed that I was right. There aren't a lot of NFL alumni to choose from so there is a clear-cut #1. Kicker Rolf Benirschke is probably #2-that's how pathetic their fb legacy is. They have 2 or 3 other "famous alumni" if you consider Dee from the 70s/80's tv show "What's Happening"? famous. "Hey hey hey!" Most ppl probably don't.

Zirg, there are actually quite a few for a long time D2 program. Here are a few.

Ken O'Brien - QB
Mike Moroski - QB, now HC College of Idaho
Rolf Benirschke, kicker, long career after a colonoscopy. Huge charity work.
Casey Merrill - DE
JT O'Sullivan - QB
Rich Martini - WR
Daniel Fells - TE
Mike Wise - DE

Dave Scott was an Ironman stud.

Dave Scott is from Davis, not sure he went to UCD.
How about Eric Heiden, without question the best winter Olympian the U.S. has ever produced.

Yes, he played water polo. ... there are others, these are just most well known.

Really got into some of the numbers tonight and man...if I’m UCD I would have some major concerns. Third down conversion rate is pretty poor. They have put the ball on the ground 7 times and there 5 ints. They have got 100 ypg on the ground but the stats aren’t very impressive getting there. Completion rate is similar to ours. You wouldn’t look at this UCD stats and say they are better than us. They did play Cal and NDSU and that effects stats. They also played hapless Lehigh.
UCD has given up redzone scores almost every time someone gets there. They also have given up 160+ypg on the ground. They average 60+ yards in penalties a game. But they also sure pass the eye test. I just can’t get a good read on this game. On paper the Griz should have a great shot at a win here. In reality, it won’t be that easy but I do think the Griz are good enough to win if we play complete game....it doesn’t have to be perfect..just complete.

For those with technical knowledge of the game, do we have to change from 3 man to 4 man front to get pressure on Maier? I know we can blitz but is that a consistent way to get effective pressure without losing something in run/pass coverage? If agressive blitzing is the best option, would it likely be from a certain position group? Safeties? Linebackers?

Define 4 man front. We almost always bring 4 men. Just usually our DE/LB hybrid comes from a stand up and we often run a stunt. I think it’s misguided that we don’t get pressure. Often times watching replays our line was forcing the QB to step backward within a 2 seconds of the ball. Also note that teams started using quick passes and roll pockets vs us. I expect much of the same vs UCD. We are gonna see quicker passes and roll pockets. We are gonna bring pressure in the A and B gaps and hope to push him to one side of the field. Their OL is good but not all world. If we can take away their run...I think that will be the most important. Make them just throw and let our safeties play over the top. If they have to cheat hard down to save the run..then we’re screwed up top. I also think we will see some exotic stuff this game that we have not seen yet this year from our D. We have been pretty bland in our coverages so far. I expect us to throw some wrinkles out there and try and catch UCD sleeping a little bit

Best team in the country, winner of 7 of last 8 NC’s just escaped, AT HOME, 27-16 by virtue of two red zone picks and somehow we’re gonna blow them out at THEIR house?

I don’t think so...

And who has NDSU played this year? Maybe they are ranked first because of history?

New coach this year and a freshman QB, right? I would agree that we don't know if UNDSU is the same dominant team they have been. At some point a coaching change is going to trip up their momentum (I know, we've heard that before) even if its just a little stumble.

I like the Griz in this one. I'm still not sold on Davis as a top 5 team. They went 5-6 in 2017, then came out of nowhere last year. I think their 2018 schedule was suspect, though. If you look a little deeper, they gave up 36 points to Northern Colorado, and needed overtime to beat Idaho State 44-37 in a home game. They gave up 59 points in their first loss to EWU.

I think the Davis defense is going to give up some points to this Griz offense. The question is whether or not the Griz defense gives up more points.

The way they lost last year gives the Griz some extra motivation. I think this years Griz team is playing with more confidence than last season and has something to prove.

Fair points about EWU and ISU, but it should be noted that UNC's scores were largely in garbage time. It was actually such a comedy of errors by our young second string that Sportscenter did a segment on it.

The 2018 schedule did feature two wins against playoff teams, relatively few true home games (one got moved), an FBS win, and a really good second game at EWU. Overall I wouldn't call it too suspect when you weigh it all out.

I guess my understanding is we play a 3-4 which i take to mean 3 down linemen. It seems that many on here feel we have struggled to get pressure and our DBs are having to cover too long and we give up a lot of yardage due to not “getting to the QB” quickly enough. If we are getting pressure then great and maybe we dont have to change too much.
