U of Seattle looking for a new coach

The University of Seattle which recently just moved up to D-1, is looking for a new head coach. I was talking to a friend today about the opening, and whether Griz assistant Nate DuChesne might be interested in the position or a good pick for Seattle. On the plus side DuChesne, knows all the high school coaches in western Washington, has a sterling reputation in Washington, is a proven recruiter, has D-1 experience. On the negative he does not have over whelming stats as a college head coach or assistant. From DuChesne point of view while D-1 coaching jobs do not grow on trees (especially one from your home town), but Seattle has got to be one of the lowest paying D-1 schools (even lower than Montana and/or Montana State) and since they are not associated with any conference they have no chance of getting into the NCAA tourney.

Just to be clear I have absolutely no idea whether DuChesne is even interested, but when I heard of the opening I thought of him immediately. Seattle has so far received over 80 application (and counting). I think, though, DuChesne, would be a great choice for Seattle, becuase he can recruit one of the better recruiting grounds in the country, and he could improve the talent there real quick. Plus hey could recruit and still sleep in your own bed most nights.

The word on lead canidates for this job are Cameron Dollar asst. UW, Che Dawson HC at Highline CC former Chief Sealth H.S. HC, and Phil matthews Nebraska asst. and former USF Head Coach. The AD at Seattle is Bill Hogan who used to be the AD at USF when Matthews was the coach there. Hogan is known to be an erogant prick and difficult to work for so well see. Tommy Lloyd and asst. at Gonzaga maybe interested in this job and become a dark horse canidate.

Tommy would be excellent and his recruiting prowess will suit him well wherever he ends up.

I agree however, the Gonzaga staff is very familiar with Hogan and his circus ways from his days at USF and I know Few doesn't care for the guy so he'd probably not want to see Tommy work for Hogan.

Seattle is going to be a tough job for it's future coach. I do not think it's pay is all that high and when the existing coach leaves to take over Cal Poly, you have to feel that there are not a lot of positives, and not having a chance to make the NCAA Tourney is tough. If I was an assistant at a place like Gonzaga I might bide my time and wait for at least a Big Sky school came open.

This would be a difficult position for a number of reasons.

First off, sugarbear is correct in saying that Hogan is a prick.

Second, as mslacat stated, it will be a while before they have a conference in which to compete...I'd like to see the WCC admit them, as it would be a good fit, but I think SU has been denied a number of times already.

Third, high admissions standards. SU does not offer admission exemptions for athletes, as most other DI schools with high admission standards do. So if a kid doesn't have at least a 3.0 GPA and a 20+ ACT they have very little chance of being admitted...which makes it very difficult to recruit...especially in the more urban areas where schools aren't as strong. I have a feeling this is a big reason why Callero left.

Fourth, they will be playing in Key arena, and will probably average less than 1,000 fans/game.

I'm not sure what they pay is, but I'd imagine SU would put together a decent package. They are a private school with lots of "friend of the school". However, Seattle is a high cost city, so it would have to be probably double what Huse and Tinkle make.

All that said...this school is in the heart of Seattle, and with the right coach and the proper support i think they could easily be a middle of the road WCC team within 5 years.

No way in hell Cameron Dollar takes the job. If he sticks with Romar for a few more years and U-Dub continues it's successful ways, he should be able to turn that into a better job than U of Seattle.

But some people would rather call the shots than be an assistant, and I sort of see Dollar this way.

UPDATE: From what I am hearing, Dollar will be announced the new head coach at Seattle U.
