Both Vaughn Autry (Serra HS) and Kareem Jamar (Westchester)will be playing for California State championships today. The two teams play in different classifications so they will not be playing againt each other though. Interestingly enough Montana State recruit Casey Trujeque's Price team won their State championship yesterday, and Bobcat recruit Jordan Salley's La Verne Lutheran high school will also be playing for a state championship today. It is pretty amazing that of the 5 California divisions (based on Size of schools) The Montana D-1 schools have a horse in 4 or the championships.

By the way Westchester and Jamar won the Division 1 championship last year also. Westchester (Div. 1), Serra (Div. 3), Price (Div. 4) and La Verne high (Div. 5) schools are favored to win their championship.

yes, this is "pretty amazing," but what is truly amazing is the quality of players the two montana d-1 coaches are atttracting. these are not kids from the northwest who had an offer or two from another big sky school, but kids with offers from an array of other schools, some in bigger conferences. i'm especially impressed that the cats landed jodan sally, a kid who has been compared to craig smith, the post player from boston college who was our nemesis at the big dance. true sally hurt his knee, forcing several big schools to back off, but he was still wooed by pepperdine, tulsa, creighton and new mexico before signing with the cats. for us, thurman woods, will cherry and kareem jamar are all kids who have played for a state championship at the highest division in the state of california, and had several other offers.

what this all portends is a revival of interest in basketball in the treasure state. and as we learned recently, both from the pub a.j. got against weber, and the national tv audience and favorable ink we got against new mexico, the attention your school gets in basketball is much amplified from playing for a national football championship at a lower division, a degraded glory in the eyes of most sports fans throughout the country. paying with the big boys--another reason to love basketball.

Interesting read in the LA Times..the big guy at Westchester, Polee, is no longer being recruited by USC since the coaching change and has now been recruited by only New Mexico and Georgia....what is wrong with that picture? If another BSC school, like Weber or Portland steps up, the league will be very, very good in the very near future....it will be interesting to see if he can perform well enough tonight in Bakersfield to draw more attention....
