1. BH came to UM from the staff of Rick Neuheisel at Washington. BH had been under the tutelage of RN for 7 yrs. at CO first, then WA. I'm sure they were good friends, RN only 3 years senior to BH. I lived in CO at the time & followed the CO Buffaloes. I recall a lot of press re: RN's violating NCAA recruiting rules and criminal conduct by his players.
Don't get me wrong! RN was a damned good coach, w/ winning records at CO & WA. But, I think BH got the idea that to win, you bend the rules and get talented players regardless of their character. Certainly, I can't read BH's mind; I'm only trying to establish the fact that BH is not "pussified."
2. When BH went to UNLV, Jim Livengood was the AD. When Ty Gregorak, BH's linebacker coach, hit the headlines for misdemeanors at a club in CO, JL had Ty fired on the spot, no waiting for "the process" of the courts. I believe this had a powerful influence on BH re: the RN influence: Shananigans w/ off-field actvities were off limits. The only test was, "Keep out of the newspapers, or you're gone." BH credited Livengood in his remarks at the presser.
3. I think BH learned a lot about successful coaching w/o off-field recruiting violations and recruiting questionable players, when he worked for Rocky Long at San Diego State, whom he also credited at the presser.
I believe Bobby returns to UM as a far more mature and better coach. I do not believe he's been "pussified." I believe he will bring the same drive and attitude back to the Griz, something we all know has been lacking since he left. What will be different is few or no players in Missoulian headlines. I believe Bobby, due to his experiences when he left, returns w/ a better perspective as to what Griz and college football are all about.

Nice story, but not based on facts.
Don't think RN had any significant criminal stuff. The recruiting violations were the tiniest things ever. Almost jokes. The recruit took his sweatshirt home form his recruiting visit. Oh my god, can you believe it.
No, Hauck did not learn or try to bend rules or bring in guys with weak character.
The UNLV president pushed to get TG fired. Not Livengood. TG ended with zero charges, after the investigation was done. Livengood gave a recommendation for TG in later coaching job applications.
I believe Hauck credited Rocky Long for being good at coaching, not bringing in players who got into trouble.
Again, nice story. Just not true.

Good response and I agree with the majority of it.
Neweasel, is a win at all cost coach, and BH's mentor, His first trip was all about keep the players out of the headlines and everything is OK. Thats why he got in the fight with the Kamine, he kept it out of the papers and handled it internally, then the god damn student journalist started snooping around and asking questions, it pissed him off.
I agree with your assessment of what he learned at UNLV and the TG incident. It taught him that there was zero tolerence for players/coached that got caught in the headlines.
At SDSU he has been living in the heart of the PC culture. He sees it first hand every day. He sees that RL goes out of his way to run a clean program.
When he wants to return to Missoula the first discussions how much did his leadership philosophy contribute to the stuff that has gone on at um since he left. I am sure that KH stressed that these incidents just can not happen, it isn't about keeping them out of the headlines, its about preventing them from happening in the first place. KH has BH on a short leash on these matters. BH is not dumb, he sees what is happening in our country, almost daily somebody gets doxed for offending someone or worse. BH knows he has a zero tolerance policy and one slip and KH and the new prez will come down hard along with an unfriendly press that is digging to be the first to find his mistake.
I think any coach you would have hired would be under the same scrutiny, but BH because of his past is under a microsope by the press and the PC culture. BH knows that if anything happens on his watch it is almost career ending for him, yes he will still be able to get a ST coach job, but no more HC jobs.
The new BH will be very different than the old BH

I think UM and Hauck will be very careful in recruiting transfers or others with any bad history. Not that there won't be any second chance kids, but my guess is that there will be fewer of them and transfers will receive even more scrutiny. At least at places like UM, the emphasis on recruiting kids with character has gotten more attention over the years, and I expect that to continue at UM.
