as we talk about the griz moving to a new conference, i'm reminded once again how important tv expsoure is.
case one: carrie brownstein, lead guitarist for sleater-kinney. great band, loved their music. then they disbanded. then carrie appeard on portlandia. good as sleater-kinney was, carrie brownstein got what she describes as "exponentially" greater exposure from the tv show than she did from all those years with the band. and now, partly as a result of that, the band is back together, and my wife and i will be paying hefty ticket prices to see them perform here in may.
case two: tonight's big sky championship game will be on espnu. as several have mentioned in another thread, espnu is not part of their cable package, nor of mine. meantime, wyoming and san diego state play later this afternoon for the mountain west championship, and the game will be televised on cbs. that is cbs as in "sixty minutes" cbs, a broadcast channel. and since i live in the fourth largest media market in the country, this game will get "exponentially" more viewers in this one market than montana-eastern washington will get nationally on espnu.
i believe "the griz" are becoming a national brand. i believe montanans, in their infinite sense of inferiority, have no idea how this state is loved nationally (just read "travels with charley" by john steinbeck), or how much exposure the griz football and basketball teams have garnered nationally--with almost no tv. i can only dream.
