Google "Trash Can" and see what comes up. That' right, the boy from Butte. Outkick's got it teed up.
KGVO reports the temper tantrum this way:
"Right before halftime, in a moment that’s now gone viral, Mellott ran out of bounds on the Bison sideline and, without hesitation, tipped over one of their trash cans. Yes, you read that right.
Now, was this a psychological move to throw off the other team? Or maybe it was just a heat-of-the-moment stunt fueled by the adrenaline of a championship game. Either way, the act earned him a new nickname among football fans around the nation: “Tommy Trash Can.” Some are laughing it off as a prank, while others are shaking their fists in the air, calling it unsportsmanlike."
I was watching the game in a bar of 3 griz fans and 60 Cat fans. The place erupted in applause when Tommy pulled that stunt. High fives all around. His team was getting its ass kicked but this showed "he was still the man." Some Cats who missed it were groaning when the replay cut off the trash can flip.
Lots a praise this kids way through the years but in seeing that moment, the words poise under pressure, maturity, leadership and champion, for me don't come to mind. Lot's of opinions here from "spoiled brat dick move" to "great rallying point for the troops", but calling those who see a negative in Tommy's behavior "dick heads" and "fuck ups" for having those views shows pure emotion over reason.
From my perch high above, it was just a slight mar on an otherwise great game by TTC, not worthy of the defensiveness on display.
One thing I will say is I've had the job of trash collection at 40 years of charity events, family wedding receptions, football tailgates and such and never once appreciated the jackasses who tipped over trash cans. Of course, if Tommy came over and picked up the garbage all would be forgiven.
