Nope. He used his red-shirt year last year. Medical red shirt is rare and involves significant extenuating circumstances. His 5 year to play 4 has started and he used one last year. In order to get a 6th year, he basically has to miss 2 years due to injury, not one. This link explains it better.

Assuming he has surgery now (or better yet, last week), he could be back within 5-6 months and still hopefully participate in a good chunk of the 2017 season. I have no personal knowledge of his injury or timeline, that just seems to be the typical recovery period these days for an ACL.
Let the kid heal up, and regain confidence. If you've had any kind of knee surgery, nothing is going to feel normal the rest of this year. Nothing to rush him back for.
