Tough decision awaits Idaho athletics

Speaking of crimes, can anyone on the Idaho BOR be prosecuted for thinking that Idaho could keep up with the Boise State Jones, or that Idaho wouldn't have been seen as a joke of the FBS division?

The SBOE should be prosecuted for forcing Idaho to stay in the Big Sky because BSU and ISU didn't want us to leave them behind. They f***ked us in the 70's and we're still trying to recover.

I'm curious as to what an average Idaho fan would consider an academic peer institution.

Colorado State, Montana State, New Mexico State, Oregon State, Wyoming, Utah State, Washington State.

I don't know about that? ARWU or Shanghai Jiaotong University rankings have U of I in the next group down (or more) from the above schools. The alarming trend is U of I trending down ward in the ranking since 2001. Falling out of the top 500 in 2008.

Oregan state alumni would spit on you for comparing his top 100 school with a top 500 school.

I thought the topic was conference affiliation? If the Mountain West or Pac-12 are possibilities for Idaho I'd say go for it, but I don't think there is much difference between the academic prestige of the current Big Sky or WAC. Each conference only has 4 schools that are even ranked in the top national universities: Denver, Idaho, USU, LaTech and UC-Davis, UND, MSU, UM. Research affiliation is what presidents are interested in, from what I understand, and aside from the football-only UC-Davis, neither conference can offer blue-chip academic institutions.

I think Idaho compares favorably with the schools mentioned above.

Scholastics and pride aside, what happens after EWU beats you by 2 touchdowns in your own house this September??

Size of research budgets never has impressed me much.

I had hopes that UM would be in the same conference with Idaho once again, however, I didn't think it would be the Big Sky Conference. It would be a real disappointment to many Idaho fans to move to the Big Sky and FCS football, especially given many of the member schools in the Big Sky, but........

Research rankings? I think when you start comparing which colleges are better than others, it's important to remember what individuals desire in an education. I'm a historian and I want to be trained and taught by some of the best historians around. I'm at UNC finishing my MA there and I also received my BA there. I knew that by going to UNC, instead of say CSU I wouldn't be taught by a TA in front of 300 other students. UNC is the teachers college in Colorado and despite what Kemajic and other say, it serves its purpose well. I have never been taught by a TA while a student at UNC. The professors are skilled in teaching that is vital at UNC, because they are training teachers. I value the humanities so, I would also look at schools like Reed College in Portland or St. Benedictine. They aren't on any of those lists but some of the top graduates from the Liberal Arts schools are hired by some of the largest tech companies in the nation for CEO positions. Anyways, rankings are rankings and I guess they have some value but it a lot of ways it's all relative.
So I can keep on topic, no Idaho isn't moving down to the BSC. It would be the first time that ever happened, besides Marshall and that's because of the plane crash if I recall.

You're right schools like Northern Colorado do serve a purpose. The closest peer institution in Montana you will find is MSU-Billings.

Idaho is not going to come back to the Big Suck A$$ conference. Not while its FCS at least.

Don't be so sure. I hear they are very seriously considering it.

Good post. I don't think I ever said one school was better than any other school. Your post simply reinforces my post. UI and Northern Colorado are not peer institutions. We have very different missions.
