Top 25 hopes for Lady Griz

I wasn't being literal, and I am not oblivious to Lady Griz history either. This year is the first time since the early 90's that a national ranking has come into the equation. I made the allusion to Gonzaga, because certainly with the right turn events, the lady griz while even in the woeful BSC, could again return to a national level. Now, are they going to be title contenders? Probably not, but with the right recruiting we could return to the sweet 16 for the first time in ages.

While Oregon, Washington weren't on the national stage then, they certainly are now to a certain degree. Womens basketball certainly is more like the mens, where power conferences get the lions share of talent.

I remember the game against L-Tech a few years ago, in which the Lady Griz were so very close at pulling that game off. For most D-1 teams, I don't think the LG are the far away from beating a lot of teams. However they are light years from beating Maryland, Duke, Ohio State or N carolina.

I like the Gonzaga case the most, because with two players they were able to forever transform their program into a national one. Now is ali hurley and joscelyn tinkle those two? I don't know, but I am quite sure Morales is. In fact I am pretty sure, barring some major injury, Morales will have bigger impact on the LG program that Rodney Stuckey will at EWU.

But anyway, GB your point is well taken and I think we both recognize what the LG program was twenty years ago and what it could be w/ the right combination of players and success at the national level.

Thanks for the clarification. I agree on Morales. That group of sophomores is pretty special and there are some younger players that also could make an impact. I know one thing, it is easier to recruit when you have a couple studs on your team that the coach can point to. I would love to see Tinkle and Hurley play together in a couple years, that would be fun to watch, especially if they are LG.

It was mentioned earlier in this thread that Selvig might pursue Kelsey Hopkins out of CMR. I thought so too. Damn good player.

It's not happening. She signed with UGF or CGF... whatever. She's going to be a Lady Argo.

i'd like to know the story on kelsey. two-time super-state selection, averaging about 13 points a game, just dropped 34 on great falls high, described by the great falls coach as the best-passing post player in montana. sounds like the kind of player we would recruit, and maybe did.

anybody know the story?

21-2 and still unranked.

Not a surprise, take a look at the list of coaches who vote, not many this side of the Mississippi. Like Selvig said, they need to win the BSC Tournament to get into the NCAA's in all likliehood anyway.

Looks like another prospect beckons upon the horizon in 6' 2" Jordan Sullivan of Sidney. Only a freshman so it would be interesting to see how she develops in the next couple years.

I guess colleges can't start sending letters of an offering until 01 Sept of their junior year.

I love the Lady Griz as much as the next person, but I just have a hard time believing they are one of the top 25 teams in the country.
I love 'em more, 'cause we know and are around them often. But I have to agree.

At times, yes. But she's tired... very tired, and the season's far from over.

I was listening to an interview with the Sooners' coach last week, who said that any team that places major importance on their regular season wins and losses, isn't a major team. It's extending that season that matters... it's being tested by teams from outside your conference and advancing in the playoffs that gets the recognition that drives the major teams. The Lady Griz (aka Robin) have been very successful - locally. But the nasty little secret about that success is that if the football team had the same level of success, we wouldn't be adding 2,000 seats. Yeah, I know... BB doesn't have subdivisions.

I watched her play last week when CMR beat up on Skyview. I don't know squat about basketball but she struck me as athletic and smooth, as if everything is ten times easier for her than anyone else on the court.

However, I think I read in the Trib that she is headed to University Behind Target.

Lady Griz move up to #27 In AP Poll. USA Today/Coaches Poll not released yet.

Not that I'am slamming anyone, I've been guilty of it myself yielding to such temptation, but this is a pretty good article on the NCAA Bracketology, especially the 'back to basics' on Bracketology 101:

If you really want to know the principles and procedures of bracketing, this is the source:

Hopkins came to the Lady Griz camp this summer and was unimpressive. Very lazy. She didn't seem to understand that the real point of these summer camps was to impress the coaches first hand while playing against other high caliber players that attend. She's a really nice girl but constantly goofing off during competitions. Hurley and Tinkle both flipped the 'nice' switch off for competitions and racked up awards due to their high level of play. IMHO Hopkins really turned off the LG coaches with her uninspired play this summer.

For what's it worth, up to the present moment at least, the LG have a possible #9 seeding facing #8 South Florida in a tentative match-up March 18 in the Dayton Regional to be played in East Lansing, Michigan; winner to more than likely playing North Carolina in the next round. I wouldn't shy away from that.

Being seeded #6 would be better though, maybe in the near future?

And Jerry Palm of collegerpi.com has Lady Griz as a 10th seed facing Pittsburgh. At least a 10th seed doesn't face a number 1 seed the next game.

That's interesting in the fact that in his previous outing released 06 Feb 07, 3:48 PM he had the LG seeded #9 going against #8 Delaware in the Greensboro Regional. I wonder why after two road wins that he has the LG dropped from #9 to #10 in his Jerry Palm's Bracketonica:

...or are you assuming I have some power over such a selection process and proceed to pick away at me for some undisclosed reason whenever I post anything relevant to a thread? Is that 'King and Pharoah'...or just a mere 'king?'

Actually, Jerry Palm's bracket last week had Lady Griz seeded 8, and Delaware #9. But, Lady Griz playing one of the worst teams in NCAA basketball, and another that is not that much better than Sac State, certainly can have an affect on seeding.

Seeding and bracketing is very subjective.

Sorry, my bad, I probably would have noticed that except this mere 'five minute' time limit for editing somewhat irks me. Even the 1972 (July - Sept) World Chess Championship between Bobby J. Fischer and Boris Spassky in Rejkjavik allowed forty-five minutes per move. And they were playing for higher stakes at that even.

This is probably the best chance for the Lady Griz to be ranked this year.

#19 Nebraska lost to Texas Tech and Missouri.
#20 Louisville lost to Connecticut and Marquette.
#22 California lost to Oregon.

NC State did get the big win over North Carolina over the weekend though. I wouldn't be suprised to see them jump Montana. Pittsburgh, Notre Dame and Temple are the others who could crack the Top 25 this week.

Those are all AP Poll rankings, btw.

Montana got 37 votes this week, up from 15 last week.

California dropped out of the rankings, but stayed ahead of Montana.

Nebraska fell to #25, and Louisville to #23.

NC State did jump Montana and got 66 votes this week.
