What a maroon...

The failure to equip the ship with enough lifeboats, not to mention the choice increase speed and ignore ice warnings doomed Titanic. Bad decisions are what led to this most famous of shipwrecks.

His analogies are worse than mine. The Titanic actually had MORE lifeboats than required by then-current law. And it was common practice in the north Atlantic to steam at higher speeds until ice was sighted. Hindsight sure is 20/20, ain't it?

And I don't know how he could possibly put the UM situation as #1 when we don't even know the true impact yet. He's just a TAD bit premature here...

I thought for sure the list was going to look like this:

10) Quinn's duis
9) biter-gate
8) tazer-gate
7) dorm fight
6) JW
5) MSU fight
4) curb stomp
3) house break in
2) rapes
1) MSU's meth/murder

Have to say his #5 shows that he really doesn't follow Griz BB at all and just quickly looked at some records.

For example... I don't remember the Holst firing being too controversial... In fact if I remember right the reason the Griz made it to the big dance that year (from what I understand) is that he basically butted out and allowed the very talented, very athletic Griz players to actually play and not have to worry about being chucked in the dog house the first time they fucked up on the court.

And sure... Kennedy's record was horrible with the Griz. He could recruit, but couldn't seem to do much with the talent. However he left the cupboard WELL stocked for the next coach, who took the Griz to back to back NCAA tournaments including a win over 5 seed Nevada. A little harsh to call that a debacle when he left Coach K with players like Andrew Strait, Kamarr Davis, and many others...

I could think of much bigger debacles for Griz BB than leaving the cupboard stocked with that type of talent. Sure Kennedy didn't even come close to taking the Griz to the sweet 16...but he left the tools there for a coach like Coach K to come close...

Here is my top 3 for UM
#3 the scholarship scandal at UM from 1973 that lead to a de-emphasis on football at UM, and eventually Swarthout leaving and a lost decade of football at UM.

#2 in 1993 President Dennison led 7 other University presidents in voting to reduce the football scholarship levels from 63 to 45, effectively turning the Big Sky into a D-II league, or as Idaho's John L Smith said, turning football into a club sport. The move finally allowed Idaho and Boise State to convince the board of regents that the Big Sky was a sinking ship filled with Schools that didn't want to compete at the D-I level, and the Idaho Board of regents granted their request to move to I-A and the Big West.

The Big Sky later rescinded the decision in an effort to keep Idaho and Boise State, but too late, once the gate was open those schools were not coming back.

#1 the decisions to de-emphasize athletics from the 1940's to the early 1960's, leading the program to go from the Pacific Coast Conference to Skyline to D-II.

If we include MSU I think a coach dealing meth and players killing each other over cocaine deals going bad has to trump any budget issue or coach firing.

the fact that we can even make a list should tell us we can do a lot better. the joke isn't the writer....it's the material he has to write about.

The version of the budgetary problem that led to Hogan's firing isn't even close to accurate, although it is Dennison's official version. Dennison knew of the ANNUAL budgetary shortfall for over 2 years before the shit hit the fan. He was told about it. He sat in meetings where it was discussed in details. He actively participated in discussions on where to come up with it, from raising ticket prices, playing money games, going to GSA members, etc. In the end, he chose not to do anything about it. Then when the audit showed that, in fact it did create a deficit of $1M over 2 years, he was SHOCKED!!

He did exactly what Engstrom did. He cut things off before they got to him. Someone had to go. It was Hogan. It was O'Day.
