Tom "Bob" Katz

Was it just me or did Tom Katz seem to lean a little more to the cats in both of the games this weekend?

I, for one, am getting a little tired of having him play the "impartial announcer" role. I'd rather listen to an announcer who seems to care about how the Griz are playing.

I talked to my parents about this just today and they told me that they got so sick of Katz defending the Bobcats style of play last night they turned on Mick Holien and muted the TV. While that works just fine, I think Griz fans need to stand up and let KPAX know that they'd like to hear a TV announcer who actually comes across as a Griz fan.

I learned my lesson about Katz during the GRIZ football season. I am not as concerned about bias as I am about his knowledge. I did not listen at all to him last night. I went with Mick Holein from the beginning. Tom was chock full of misinformation as far a GRIZ football was concerned.

You do realize that these are statewide broadcasts, not just shown in Missoula... if you don't want to hear impartial announcers turn on your radio. 90% of viewers outside of Missoula would rather not hear another Grayson Davis having a verbal orgasm every time the Griz make a good play. From watching Griz FB games this fall, Katz does not favor the other team at all in his comments.

MSU1 - How would Bobcat fans feel if their main TV announcer & local sportscaster began to defend the Grizzlies on close calls, comment about how the Griz will hopefully play better, and highlight more Grizzly plays than Bobcat plays in all his broadcasts.

That just how I feel, he's from a Missoula TV station and if I'm watching the Griz on that Missoula station I'd rather hear an announcer who gets excited for Montana.

I may sound like a whiny Griz fan after the Cats beat the Griz, but the night before when the Lady Griz easily put away the lady cats it was basically the same story.

Rumor was that even Katz and coach Hauck don't really get along.

ANYWAYS! The guy says, "Cat-Griz" and we ALL know it's "Griz-Cat". heh heh (Right Missoula?)

Tom probably didn't call that game any differently than he calls every other game. Tom delibrately calls games impartially but usually there's someone else calling with him that's partial to the Griz (Dave Guffey usually). Tom wants to get into national broadcasting someday and to do that you can't seem like a "homer" ie always rooting for the team in the town you work for. If you listen to any of the games on ESPN or the major networks, the announcers really don't favor one team over the other. Tom knows some people at ESPN and he's said that he doesn't want them to tune into one of his broadcasts and hear him playing up one team because it could seriously hurt his chances of getting a national broadcasting job someday. Really he's just doing his job. He's a journalist, he's supposed to be impartial. Mick Holein has a contract with the athletic department. He's allowed to play up the Griz.

No way he will ever get an ESPN job and if he does i'll refuse to watch. He is clueless as to griz athletes. YOu figure after a guy starts for four years he would know his number.

I fully agree BH isn't inviting him over for the weekends. They had a very chilly few shows following griz games.

I agree. ESPN would be a major stretch for Katz.

As far as to impartiallity, i can live with that, but Katz seems to go somewhat out of his way to praise other teams will treating the Griz like urchins. On the other hand...sometimes he's not so bad, like when Hauck is in the room with him.

How about the Wed-night fights features hauck vs katz?! :D

So we have an announcer who could care less about any of our teams, but only cares about how impartial he sounds so he can get a job at ESPN? Wow...sounds like a guy I'll never listen to again.

I guess we couldn't even tell "not quit his day job" either huh?

From here on out it's Mick Holien for me. There's only one problem, I like to watch the Bobby Hauck show too (for higlights and player interviews), maybe KPAX will bring in Mick to do the broadcasts, 'cause more and more, I can't stand Tom Bob-Katz
