Today's big meeting and possibilities for FCS football

Pretty sure this was mostly decided in the spring when those sports were canceled. Or at least a precedent was set. Scholarship limits will be temporarily expanded to allow for seniors to return for a final year of eligibility. The limits will be set on a case by case basis, and a school will not be required to offer a scholarship.

For example:
School A has 10 seniors that were on their final year of eligibility. They decide to offer scholarships to 5 of them and the players accept. For the following season, School A is allowed 68 scholarships.

Also, everyone on the team during the pandemic gets a one-year extension to their five-year clock. But the scholarship limit extensions are only available for the immediately following season. There still will be some logjam, but it will be spread over two or three seasons, not one.

Again, this hasn't been officially declared for the 2020 fall season, but it's what was used for the 2020 spring sports, so there's precedent.

For most schools the costs of additional scholarships will be prohibitive.
Especially after big ticket revenue losses. And enrollment hits.

But a logjam of players, and not enough scholarships, will develop, if players get an additional year of eligibility. Either because they opt out this season, or if this season is not held or cut very short. If no season or a season cut very short, I would expect some seniors to move on and not play in 2021, and some to remain. And, if there is more eligibility granted, then the logjam is increased because every player would get an extra year. Don't think I would want to work out and practice for 6 years to get 4 years of play, but some would. Jobs arise. Friends and girlfriends graduate and move on. College starts to lose its appeal. One of our kids did the 7 year plan at MSU and played rugby. When I jokingly asked him why he was finally deciding to graduate, he said: "Because not only have all of my friends graduated, all of them have left town." He enlisted in the Army and became a Ranger.
A 7-year boot camp at MSU....

Classless..... :coffee:

Getting bleaker for an FCS fall season. Schools will struggle to meet testing protocols when you factor in what's needed for all fall sports.

I fear Haley is correct. Lots of rules. Lots of panic. Lots of tough issues to deal with. Presumably cost challenges at many or most FCS schools. About time to get the RV for a fall of travel.

Sounds like I may get in a lot more pheasant hunting this fall! We currently are down to 4 home games, this will upset a lot of season ticket holders if we pay full ticket prices for just 4. I bet scheduling other opponents is tough right now. Even if all in conference. Too much to ponder. I will just wait till 21 August for the answers.

This is the same outlook I’m trying to maintain. Either we get to go to games or I get to do more hunting.

I'm prepared to just spend more of my fall climbing mountains, and then hopefully enjoy football in the spring.

If that's the case you might have seen the last of players like akem, toure and Lewis.
As They might be preparing for life in the nfl with workouts... Why risk an injury that close to the draft and hurt your future status?

Certainly a possibility. As a fan, would love to see nothing more for them to pursue it and succeed!

Certainly possible, but I can't do anything about that. At this point I'll just take whatever football I can get, whenever I can get it.

Someone has to make a decision for that to happen.

Agree 100% all three of them sound like stand up young guys who do things the right way on and off the field.

FCS BREAKING (3:15 ET): Big Sky Conference is OUT, one source is telling me. More than two-third schools voted "no" today to playing this fall, source said.

Working to get a statement on this news as we speak.

Might be the new reality going forward. .

1 small positive note; we will see football this fall with P5 schools and the NFL. Then spring football for the big sky and some others. Think of it as a long football season.

I’m not saying that they can’t do that, but I seriously doubt there is a player on our team with NFL aspirations that will reach their goal without playing. If they play a full season and throw up great numbers, I’d say 3 of them could get drafted, at worst they should be snatched up within 39 minutes of the draft ending. If they don’t play, I have a real hard time believing that any of them get a real serious look. I’d like to believe we’re Alabama and we could skip a year of play and still have 12 guys drafted, but we aren’t.

Too bad Taco Bell did away with the 7 layer burrito; would've made watching the P5 peewee league bearable this fall.

2020 is so Shakespearean.

So how does spring football work with a fall season? The players have to have some down time.
To bad spring football couldn’t be more of a development season allowing starters to play no more than the first half max and allowing backups and freshmen to play in the second half for development. I would rather spring be three or four OOC games instead of holding team scrimmages. Again starters can play no more than 1st half. Then assuming all is clear you start fall season as usual.
