Today’s Press Conference

I like the energy and the focus - keeping the spring simple and let the best rise to the top. Put your best players in positions to make big plays. I'm still not expecting a world-beating defense here but I think this guy brings some good edge and smarts to the role.

Sounds like (feedback from others) the EWU defensive coaches have been really impressed with the athletes we have here and the strength / recovery / nutrition support services compared to what they had there. When at EWU they felt they could get kids, but would lose them super fast. Here - guys want to come play and succeed here where EWU was more a "get me out of here as fast as possible" type of vibe.
I would disagree with the expectations to have world beater defense as I think it’s too early to tell, we have do have talent. Little worried about interior DL. However, Sometimes a different voice or scheme change can make a world of difference. I’ll have more thoughts after the Spring game.

So what Big dudes are still out there and available right now? The coaches said they’ve got four scholarships and they want to bring in some big bodies for the D line which is music to my ears. I suppose some guys could become available after their own spring camps as well.

That’s the question. So no one new can enter the portal so they would already have to be there. There’s a few still in there and we offered one. Varying thoughts if they are still in the portal what that means. I tend to think it’s not the best sign. Drake just had a coaching change so a bunch of their DL jumped in the portal. There’s two DTs I like from them. You can still get d2 and d3 guys because their portal doesn’t close is what I’ve heard.

The other route which is not NCAA approved, is a guy can unenroll and and enroll as a walk on at the new school thus by passing the portal. Miami did last year with a corner from Wisconsin. Then I’m sure they used NIL to make up the scholarship difference.

So it’s more limited but not impossible.

To be honest, I was about as thrilled with BK as I was when BH was introduced as the new HC for 2003. I'll give BK the benefit of the doubt, but 13-2 is the floor, the standard is set. Onward and Upward! Play ball!

The standard has been set that 13-2 is the floor 15 years into the coaching regime. Hauck went 9-4 with a first round exit in the playoffs his first season, and he took over a team that was 2 years, not 25 years removed from being national champions.

I think Griz fans need to temper expectations. It is difficult to win games. It is extremely difficult to win 13 or more games. To me winning 8 games and making the playoffs would be a successful first year of the BK era.
8 wins will be a major disappointment with this team. I think it’s 10 wins but what matters is beating the rival and going on a run of some kind in playoffs.

Some here have high expectations for this season. I hope your right.
I'm a bit worried that things could go south and way south.

I believe the offense will be competitive. Not so confident about the defense. Haven't kept up with all the transfers, but there are a lot of holes to fill. Do we even have a returning defensive player who is all conference? This team may look like the Eagles of yesteryear.

We only had 2 first team all conference players on defense last year, Peyton Wing and Hunter Peck. Peyton Wing is returning. Having half return isn’t a bad percentage.

Look at the evisceration the Griz underwent in 2012. Its hard to imagine a more fucked up situation, and the two who replaced Pflu, but BH righted the ship, got the rudder back in the water, but just couldn't get over the big one. Those who remember the Silvertip Skydivers entry into WGS are familiar with Tom Petty's song 'Free Fallin.' I think that would be appropriate to be the school song under Royce, not 'Up With Montana.'

The Griz had a losing record in 2012 at 5-6. I would agree that finishing under .500 is inexcusably bad this upcoming season.
