Tinks & minutes.

Tinks is the worst coach at distributing minutes I have ever seen. He has been a cronic run stopper and confidence breaker since he has been head coach. We have a 7'er that can actually chew gum and walk at the same time, and every other team out there would kill to have on the court now. We have Sharpe, a guy that is a complete stud that is always productive on the court, but has a quota that won't be broke even if he is going nuts out there. Just like last year Tinks wont break his quota, Dhouly was as improductive as I had seen, Chavy was kicking ass on the court and Tinks only allowed for certain minutes to be played by Chavy. Sat. night Sharpes going crazy, Stauds hitting treys, Sharpe got his 3min, Stauds got a foul, took them both out and there goes the run. Quavlle plays one minute 1 t.o. and 1 foul tinks takes him out for the game. This is not grade school b-ball, Quavlle new he screwed up he didn't need to be benched the rest of game. He is not a liability he is one of the best freshman we have ever had that has hardly seen the court. The difference between Howard and Quavlle, their coach gives Howard confidence and minutes, and tinks doesn't. We all want tinks to be tougher on these guys, but in the right ways. When someones playing good let them keep playing until their to tired to go on!

I was wondering how when Staud seemed to have it going early in second half and basically the only one who was hot, how you could take him out for so long at that time. I also was disappointed we did not seem to try to pound it in to Strait very often, instead took some real wild threes.

Because he picked up some real early fouls trying to guard Taylor. If you bring him back what happens if he gets into more foul trouble? Remember the game did not get out of hand until 1/2 way through the second half.

Stads picked up 2 quick fouls in the first half, then got his 3rd almost immediately after hitting the back to back 3's to begin the second half. Coaching 101 says take him out, hindsight says maybe they should have left him in. Either way. Tinks gets second guessed. I think there are a LOT of things Tinks could have done differently, but I think Stads going out of the game after the 3rd foul was the right move. I just wish Qvale would have gotten a second look, and why not give a fresh Graves a shot at guarding Taylor. I would have told Graves to guard Taylor even when the Griz have the ball, and if he goes to the bathroom, hand him the TP. He was killing the Griz when he got the ball, so try and deny. How much worse could Graves have done? :twocents:

It might have been the perfect situation for Graves..but that is hindsight also...someone had to try to stop Taylor. I think his
airballs in the paying time he had...has hindered giving him a big
shot out there. He has quickness and hops..I remember a nice dunk Graves had.

Griz are not going to win to many games with your back court
shooting 25% and Taylor hitting everything he chucked up.

The momenteum really switched after those two threes when
Staud went out though. People on this board have been saying
Sauds needs to shoot more..HE IS THE BEST PURE SHOOTER ON tHE TEAM ! BUT if he starts chucking up bad shoots He might just look like Cam and Martin out there. It seems like all the other teams have guys comign off two or three screans
we just stand and try to feed the post. PICK and Roll (nice post) ...or fast break..What a concept ! I think there is hope for Cam..and he will be back. I see Martin riding a lot of pine time until he graduates..one bad attitude (and 4 blow by you for layups)can be a bad thing for Team work.

Things turn around on Thursday..I really believe it !
I have not given up yet...but it is fun to dream about a 56 point
big man.

I think the consensus of Griz BB fans is that Stads is a pure shooter, even his misses look like they are going in. I also think we could all agree that Stads cannot create a shot off the dribble. That being said, why doesn't Tinks run the same type of plays that the Griz ran for Jeremy Lake and Mike Warhank, two prolific 3 point shooters who also were not able to create their own shots. :twocents:

We have not really seen it so we dont know for sure..but Stauds
might be able to create some shoots..but might be the only guy
doing what the coach harp on..feed the post unless you have
an open look. Either way..I have been impressed with Stauds development..and he has few more years to learn to get to the line.
I hope he does because his foul shots are money.

The future is bright..Jordo a junior, Cam..Qvale, McGilis (next year) ...they need to just work through this time now and learn from it.

You are right...and that is what I was trying to say...Run some
double and triple screens..and get some motion, kick outs..kick in
for dunks..etc..

Everyone has to agree on this... just so long as we're not sitting there a year from now saying "well, we're just not as talented as we thought we were"

I too am disappointed in our losses this year, similar patterns to last year happening this year too. I am a very frustrated fan this year as well as last year. I agree with much of what is being said regarding this team and Tinks. What I do not agree with is that Tinks is not and will not be a good coach.

Tinkle's weaknesses are nothing more than growing pains of never being a head coach before. He is smart and articulate, takes criticism well and learns. He is very personable and a well above average recruiter. He is also loyal to a fault, and little timid in experimenting with different strategies and personnel. In time, he needs to draw himself away from being every players' friend during their time here as players. After their playing days, be every player's best friend.

This year and last year a statement and actions had to be made to get everyone on the same page. Those actions were limited and had a limited effect. Right now, I would not hesitate to sit Rundles down. Last year, Dlouhy should have been sitting much earlier. One has to admit the GRIZ were much better last year with Mayes playing and Dlouhy sitting. Hell, maybe even Swift should have been given more of a chance.

Right now, things are not working collectively as a team. Why not experiment and stick with a big lineup more often? Why not see what kind of impact GRAVES can have on this team? Why not sit Rundles? Why not see what kind of impact a true center rotation of Qvale and Vanderjagt would make? Why not insist on getting the post players touches before any shot is taken unless WIDEOPEN? Why not run some simple picks for Staudacher and Martin? Speaking of jump shooters, anyone notice when Martin squares up and goes straight up and forward he is lights out shooting? He has the same problem Criswell did until LK corrected it his SR year. The leaning and fading jumpers do not cut it!!! Put an end to them. Nothing but open straight up and forward j's! As for Staudacher, he hardly ever shoots a perimeter shot leaning, yes his shot is a thing of beauty and getting quicker!!!

Defensively, too many players pick and choose when to play defense and when not to. Sorry, I do not care how long you have been a GRIZ, if you sluff on defense you see pine time until proven you will play defense hard for EVERY second! Do not try executing the offensive game plan, once again sit until you do as asked and expected.

I have faith in time Tinkle will be a great coach here. Unfortunately in GRIZNATION many do not accept any coach taking time to learn and get better. LK and Huse suffered through their growing pains as headcoaches at a much lesser level, not in the spotlight. LK learned in the CBA. Huse learned at a small college level. Both well removed from the spotlight and Scrutiny Tinks is learning in.

With all this said, come 08 when Taylor, McGillis, and Selvig are eligible, inconsistencies happening this year will be unacceptable. Also if a true leader and/or point guard do not emerge, something is definitely wrong!!!! As for this year, I know how difficult it can be to fall short at any one position. In this case SF, and PG. As for PG I believe we have the players. As to when or if either will be the PG we need is yet to be determined. If one does not emerge, run the damn 1/2 court offense through our posts, mainly Hasquet.

I will not give up on this team or Tinks. I will continue to be patient and continue to believe the best will come, hopefully sooner than later though!!! :thumb:

I was excited for this year thinking cam and hasquet would mature with another year under their belts. With strait, that's a pretty solid lineup....so what happened? Team does not play together. Why should we be excited next year? Add Selvig to the lineup and now we have a 7 footer chucking up 3's? the lack of discipline will continue to next year as tink and his staff piss away another talented group of individual players that he's unable to mold into a team.
