Tinkle tells Fresno no

I think Fresno State is a great job for an up and coming coach. You could really build a solid mid-Major program there is you have the goods. It is also a great local in California. My sister and Brother in-law bought some land up there about 10 years ago and I took a trip up there to look at designing them a vaction home and I thought it was a very nice place just a few mile out side the city.

Now that Lon Kruger is being considered for Oklahoma < http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=6281370" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; would anyone consider the Head coaching stint at UNLV a lot more attractive than many another school? Tinkle going to UNLV may be a possibility; of course, it all depends. That's up to UNLV to hire who they want and I suppose there'd be quite a few applicants for that one!!! A big name coach would certainly be considered, IMHO, considering the tradition, someone like ex-HC Gene Keady of Purdue now an assistant at St. John's, I suppose; but one never knows. They may decide on a rookie coach who has only been an assistant up to now. Depending. Tinkle looks pretty good for this position, though. The temptation here wouldn't be overlooked, I think, and it wouldn't surprise me any, if I was in a similar position.

It'd be awfully difficult to pass up, considering. That is, at least putting in an application for. I know I would, and I wouldn't blame him any.

Seems like there are two main candidates for that job, and I would be shocked if one of the two did not get it.

First is Dave Rice, an assistant at BYU and former UNLV player. I believe his brother coaches at a high school in LV which currently has 3 of the top 50 recruits in the class of 2012. He will certainly be a hot name.

The other is Reggie Theus, currently assistant coach for the Timberwolves. It seems he is interested, and he is well respected. Showed himself as a solid coach and recruiter at New Mexico St when he was there.

Both of these guys are high profile and will certainly be looked at before Wayne Tinkle. I think the Griz are safe in this aspect, Tinkle is very unlikely to be a strong candidate for the UNLV job.

I could see UNLV getting the big man's attention and consideration and I would think if that came up, he might bolt, but I don't see it happening.

I still don't see him leaving for Fresno either. It would be a step up in programs and probably a good chunk more in pay, but, ...well, it's Fresno! Count me in the camp that thinks that place is a dump. Fortunatly, I only spent a couple days there, and I am sure there must be some nice parts, but I have a tough time thinking a guy with strong roots here would move his family to a s***hole like that.

I agree with you. Granted, it would be a pay raise, but they are not hurting for money. I doubt the pay increase would be enough to justify exposing his kids to badder things about the Fresno area. With gang violence there, that alone would be enough for me to stay away. A lot of wrong person, wrong time type crimes in areas like that.

I bet anyone with any kind of money would live in Clovis if he had to work in Frenso. This is what people sometimes overlook. Just because you move to a certain region doesn't mean you have to live in the worst neighborhood and walk the streets at 2am wearing gang colors. I share a county with more gang members than probably almost anyone, and I've never heard of an incident remotely close to me.

Clovis has a lower crime index than Missoula over the years.

Relieved to hear that about Clovis. For those of us that do not live in these areas, all we see is television on specialty networks (crimetv, true tv, biography, etc) that portrays areas certain ways.

Crime aside, does anyone to be in a place that one day could be cast off into the ocean? Sorry, Fresno would be one area I could not be convinced to live or work in.

Yeah. When you are producing a show about crime, it doesn't make sense to film in the nice parts; kind of like looking for star constellations in the daytime. You are kidding about the falling into the ocean thing, right?

I hope that we will all be kidding about that for many years. Just never know what to believe, or not, when it comes to mother nature. After the events the last few months, I certainly have become more aware of things like that being a possibility.

Then again, each of us have our own comfort zones. My comfort zone is away from the oceans, huge populations, and fast pace of life. I am most comfortable in Montana, yet there are some people that cannot stand Montana.

Fair enough. You will definitely save money on housing. My comfort zone is above 50 degrees. Different strokes for different folks.

Fresno is the armpit of California! Why anyone would want to live there is a mystery.

That's very true, but Arizona is California's butthole. Scottsdale is supposedly the jewel of the desert and it looks like West Covina. I'd rather be dead in California than alive in Arizona.

Then I suggest you and your liberal buddy stay among your own kind. You can eat burritos daily, drive your highly-mortgaged European cars, live in your 1700 square foot bung-hole-alo with your $3,500 monthly mortgage, and leave the smog for Yosemite every weekend.
For someone who lives in such a WONDERFULL happy place, you sound very bitter...I am among my kind,,,human beings, and love burritos, but prefer Mole...and my own car is not European but Japanese, and paid for, my kids have paid for German cars...I don't think I could live in a 1700 sft place anymore...I did that in college...my place now does have a mortgage...and it is roughly 3.5 times what you quote...and I don't go to Yosemite, much, anymore, but do have a second home in Palm Springs....So, I guess, I should be as bitter as you?

The truth always seems bitter to those who want to "live among people of all types". So, keep your illegal alien safe havens in California, and we will continue enforcing federal law in Arizona and exporting them back where they belong. Your state is irrevocably broken trying to pay for all of the entitlements, and all you can say is "keep the illegals coming"!

It also seems to have a pretty decent arena for home games; one sitting 15,500 fans for a game < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Save_Mart_Center_at_Fresno_State" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and they appear to have a beautiful campus; all this talk about gang warfare and all, that just reminds me of Oakland. What about that place? Even Al Davis couldn't stay there for long. I mean, if Al Davis can't put up with it, who can?

IDK, man. I think to most peeps, Southern California is more desirable than AZ if one can afford to live in a nice area. Just look at what people pay to live in Southern California. Now, I wish I was like you and many others who actually prefer to live in a place that the market deems as less desirable. You all are the lucky ones who can derive, not the same, but even more enjoyment from cheaper real property. Shit, I would love it if I could rewire my brain into liking rural Nevada more than the beach. I could retire much earlier...

My point is I can accept the fact that you like AZ and even applaud you for it, but that doesn't mean I'm crazy for thinking it pretty much sucks.

I wish more people thought it sucked, especially Californians.

I'm sure you can find a nice neighborhood in any city, but the Central Valley is hurting hard. Not a great place to live, according to a lot of people that live there. From Bakersfield on up, even Sac. I know a lot of people that went to school at Pacific in Stockton and they basically say they didn't leave campus, especially after dark. It gets pretty sketch.

This is a little sensational, but 6 of the top 20 cities on this list are in the Central Valley. Not the greatest place to live or recruit to.

I lived in Bakersfield during the mid and late 90's and found it to be much more pleasant then the rep it has. The majority of Bakersfield, especially west of Hwy 99 is just fine, and you can walk the streets with no problems. There are a few neighborhoods east of downtown that potentially could be troublesome, but as part of my job I was in them daily too, and never had any problems.

That report is not just crime based, but also takes into account real estate & unemployment. They all go hand in hand to some extent. I also had offices in Merced, Modesto, and Redding and never experienced any troubles either.

In fact the most trouble I ever had in any town or office was Havre, Montana....lol.

Hey cda griz easy on the rural nevada comments, it isn't montana but it will do. Plus we provide all you rich folks with your gold lol.

Haha, no offense intended, man. :D I just tried to think of a place that I thought would have cheap property. I'm sure it's not bad.

I see where Fresno hired a 9 year assistant from Texas. I would bet that Tinkle withdrew his name when he figured that he was probably down the list for picks. It did get him a raise and more years guaranteed so good for him. Now see if we go to NCAA next year.
