Tinkle gets a commit ......

... and then loses it! I think!

Here is the story

I was hearing the Last 10 day’s that the Griz had landed a commit from a JC player to finish out their 2010 recruiting class but I was having a hard time nailing down the story. I think I have it now, but it is a little confusing.

The Griz, more specifically assistant coach Freddie Owens have been recruiting Chris Henry from Garden City junior college in Kansas for most of the winter, and I am told about a week to 10 days ago Henry committed to play for Montana next year. With a commitment gained for their last scholarship the Griz canceled further prospects visits to Missoula. A couple days’ later the folks at Cal Northridge came a calling on Henry and convinced him to take another official visit to their campus. This kind of thing can really throw a monkey wrench into a school's recruiting plans. I have heard the Griz are trying to reschedule the other prospects but it has become a logistic problem for some. It is not sure as of right now whether the scholarship offer from Montana is still on the table but a few sources tell me they are not at all happy with Henry.

I have more info on henry on my Blog.

While Sprinkle is a former Bobcat player and coach and blue and gold runs in his veins, I highly doubt that he let alone head coach Braswell would offer a player or even spend one of their 12 NCAA mandated Maximum official visits, just to put a monkey wrench into the Griz recruiting. These things are too valuable to waste on a a team not in their conference, or that they will even play.

No they wouldn't do it "just to insert that monkey wrench" but if it works out that he signs with CSN and turns out to be a great player for them, it would give sprinkle and the current cat coaches a little extra enjoyment, I'm sure.

In principle I agree, though I would guess it would give Sprinkle a "little extra enjoyment" more than Huse. While Huse is very competitive, he is not the type to take enjoyment in others losses. Now if Montana State was recruiting him and MSU landed him yes big time enjoyment. That is just my opinion though.

Give the scholarship to a kid that wants it. I feel if a kid decommits to explore other options, your chances of that kid dedicating himself to the program and the school truly diminishes. I realize that these are 17 to 18 year old kids who are making important life decisons, but you've got to evaluate a player's desire to commit himself to a program as much as you do their talent. Historically, we have signed some very talented recruits who have come in with little allegiance to the school or the program. Often times these types of players get frustrated and leave the school or else have a selfish presense on the team. As a coach, I would want players who want to be here and who are eager to learn, improve, and play for the school instead of themselves. I realize thats tough to evaluate, but a decommitment should be a huge red flag. BTW, why aren't we recruiting the Pearson kid out of Big Sandy?

With Cherry already here and Autry and Jamar coming in, I wonder why recruiting another guard would be a priority. :?

That struck me as odd, too, Whiz. But, I see he was an all-conference footballer... We never can find enough cornerbacks!

Sounds like the Griz have a great class coming in.

As far as Sprinkle goes, he really made a name for himself as a recruiter at Cal State Northridge. When he came to MSU for a few years he did a great job for us. If I remember correctly when CSN hired their new head coach their first order of business was to hire Sprinkle back (with more money than MSU could pay).

As far as recruiting goes I think that Sprinkle is close to being on the same level as Tinkle.

The Griz should be able to consistently establish themselves as the top Big Sky team with their incoming infusion of talent for years to come.
