throwing away our future with Smithwick-Hann

Looking more to me like our future success at the quarterback position may depend on a quality transfer.

Really? Seriously? You're telling me that we can't make something out of one of the four or five guys we have now? I don't like our history with transfers. I still have UMASS semi nightmares.

SSH is likely a stopgap measure for this year. We at least have a chance of completing a pass beyond 5 yards with him. It was not happening with TM. I think next year we will see a competitin between AB and Gustafson, and maybe even the true freshman from Idaho. As far as our offense, we were not really utilizing a true zone read very often, so the argument of TM being better for it is moot in my opinion. We run inside outside zone, with an occasional zone read to keep the back side defensive end from crashing down. You only need to get 3 to 5 yards a play to do that.

Does anyone feel that we had the better quarterback in any game we played this year? I didn't, and that is unacceptable for the University of Montana.

I honestly haven't really felt that much since Ochs was here. Bergquist, Selle and JJ were good but I didn't always feel they were better than the other guy. Roper...welll..enough said.

No I haven't played football on the highest level like you have Papa Bear but guess what this is a discussion board & everyone is entitled to their opinion. If you want to discuss sports by YOUR rules then you should go out & have a beer with YOUR friends. If you decide to come to a discussion board, read the posts you want to & ignore the ones that don't meet your code. This is my opinion & my opinon only. I didn't personally attack SSH I made a comment on his playing ability, get over it (he is a college athlete). I hope he is able to deal with some criticism from someone on a message board because in the real world I'm sure he will come up against criticism and how he deals with it will help define him as a person.

If we go by your idea that a fan has to have played some higher level of a sport to be able to express an opinon, you would lose 99% of NFL fans as they haven't played at that level. Simmer down and take the board for what it is a DISCUSSION BOARD

I don't recall wishing too many times we could switch QB's when Selle was under center.

Selle had a great season in 2009. One of the best in recent memory.

He was the reason we beat SDSU in the huge comeback.
He was the reason we won against ASU on our last drive.
He was the reason we were killing Villanova in the first half.

Then Bobby decided he'd seen enough.
No knock to Reynolds at all intended, but I think Selle was the MVP of the playoffs that year. It's too bad he didn't fit in Pflu's offense.

Anyways, sorry to diverge.

As for this year, I was high on TMac early on, but his passing has really disappointed. I thought he might be able to get a groove like JJ did, but I guess JJ was just a special case.

That said, I think SSH is our answer now, but I don't think he will be after this year. This is really a lost year in terms of QB play. I mean, honestly we're playing with our 4th, 5th and 6th string QBs right now. Sometimes it's tough to remember that. :?

uofoman, i'm gonna have to respectfully disagree, and i loved selle in 09. but without mariani's 98-yard kickoff return, i can't say the griz even win that game edit against sdsu

Yeah, Drew Miller, Brandon Neil and Craig Ochs were real disasters. You have to get the right transfers.

Can you name a BSC team other than Montana that S-Hann would start for?
Don't care about any other BSC team. He plays for Montana and right now he is a better choice then TM. I'll admit he played pretty crappy in the first half of Saturdays game but he still ended up with a 125 qb rating. Prior to that he had a 168 qb rating. TM had his shot and proved he wasn't the guy, which I thought he would be.

Up to date stats:Shay Smithwick-Hann
2012 Mont 6gp 61comp 96att 63.5comp% 803yds 8.4ypc 8tds 3ints 155Qb rating.

Up to date stats: T McKinney
2012 Mont 9gp 134comp 205 att 65.4comp% 1350yds 6.6ypc 8tds 8ints 125Qb rating.
Never mind that SSH stats have come against the sisters of the poor, a combined 2-16 record, because of their poor D. But let's at least complete the important stats nevertheless rather than cherry-pick:

QB/Rushing Yds/Rushing ave./Rushing TDs

TM/399/4.6/7
SSH/28/1.5/0
I didn't "cherry pick" I just grabbed the stats off the BSC website. With TM all we have is run, with SSH we have run and pass. Kind of a no brainer.

Picking only passing stats and not mentioning TM's 7 rushing TDs is most certainly cherry-picking. If you think we have run and pass with SSH, show me the run. TM ws a rushing threat; defenses have no fear whatsoever of SSH keeping; he is that slow.

I don't have a problem with coaches putting SSH's passing at a higher priority than TM's running; that's their job. I hope it gives us the best chance to win even though SSH has yet to show he's an excellent passer. TM played against the tough D's; SSH the easy ones. But when a poster like you exposes his bias or ignorance (your choice) by trying to support SSH as an all-around QB with running skills and calling it a "no-brainer", it needs to be called out.

So how do you explain the ND game? Didn't SSH look way better than TM against the same D?

Any D can scheme around TM's good qualities (i.e., stack the box and dare him to throw). That's not the same for SSH. If a D dares SSH to run, he can just hand it off to someone capable of doing so.

HOLY SH1T! Please PLease PLEASE tell me where I said SSH has any skill running the ball????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? I would say that he has proven he is not a running qb.
What I said was that with our o-line and our running backs we can run well enough to establish the running game, but also with SSH we have the ability to throw the ball as well. If you have watched with SSH in the game we have almost completely stopped with the having SSH run the option and are running the inside zone more like a straight dive and the outside zone like a stretch with SSH completely turning his back to the LOS on the outside zone read, i.e. he is not reading ANYONE. They are only asking him to run the option 1 or 2 times a game. I do not believe that SSH is THE answer, but I believe he gives us a lot better chance then TM. With TM the ONLY thing we can do is run the ball. And again, I would have absolutely no problem with TM swapping in and running spread option, as the situation dictates.
My personal belief, from the educated opinions of more than a few people WHO ARE NOT posters on this board, is that the best QB on this team is #3 on the depth chart. But until he plays who knows.
