Thoughts on a new Conference

I would think the Dakota schools would be happier to stay in the MVC than adding in the CA schools to the hypothetical conference. Tighter footprint; less travel; better rivalries. They are all 2000 miles from CPSLO.

It would make more sense to add the 3 Dakota schools to the existing BSC and split into North and South Divisions.

North: UND, NDSU, USD, SDSU, MSU, UM, EWU, PSU
South: SacSt, ISU, Weber, UCD, CPSLO, NAU, SUU, UNC

Still not clear why the Dakota schools would be motivated.

Basketball stability. The Summit League did just pick up Oral Roberts again, but the league still is unstable.

I think most NDSU and SDSU fans are waiting for an invite into the Missouri Valley Basketball conference, but I think most would be happy if we had a regional northern conference like I just laid out.

I don't think anyone would be interested in traveling out to California for games though. I really don't think you need to play out there to get recruits from there. Montana State has a good pipeline from Texas and how often do they play down there?

So every once in awhile they do. I don't think that is how they get recruits though.

NDSU gets a ton of recruits every year from Wisconsin and we never play games there.

The distance from Fargo to Wisconsin is a bit shorter than the distance from Missoula to the Bay Area and So Cal. Not a relevant comparison. The Bozeman to Texas one is more relevant, but that one apparently started primarily due to one MSU asst, who is no longer at MSU. We'll see if MSU can keep that going. The media potential of CA is also a factor for the Big Sky. Having CP, Davis and SS in the Big Sky must be making the Big Sky more known in CA.

This is exactly why Weber, NAU, ISU, PSU, SAC, Davis, Poly, SUU would love for the Dakota BIG 4 to include ND, & get them out of the Big Sky..

Yeah, MSU hasnt recruited any TX kids since Gains left 3 years ago,

In California, the Big Sky Conference is only known by many because of its occasional wins in basketball against PAC 12 opponents on their home floors. Ask nearly anyone here about the FCS and you will get a pleasant smile and that look of "what are you talking about". Cal Poly draws more to a soccer game than their average football game, Davis? Most in Calif cannot locate it, and Sac State is known for volleyball and other sports other than football. UM has instant recognition by everyone. The Big Sky might be "known" by some people here, but more like the Canadian Football League....

If MSU wants to keep its Texas pipeline open, it can pay Mr. Gaines, just like any university can pay for his service.
Montana could pickup a California road game on its non conference schedule if it had to. There are universities that recruit California without having a California team in its conference. A seventh of the US population is in California. To not recruit the state miss out on an large pool of talent.

MSU had 5 senior Texas kids on the roster this year, and not more than 2 in any of the younger years. How do you explain that? Pipeline drying up?
