This week's GFP with Andrew Schmidt

I wonder if the growing negativity on the pod is a reflection of the overall mood of the fanbase? We see where the Griz are, and we see where they need to be, but it’s always just out of reach. It’s healthy and normal to question things and get frustrated about not meeting stated goals or “The Standard.”

We’ve always been a mix of negative Nancys and positive Pollys on this board. The pod is like looking in a mirror, if the mirror is way more rational and reserved. You gotta have the troll that shows up to spice things up, just like here. I love the guests, tho. Sammy, Coulter, Riley, Sample Kyle, etc. It brings in more perspective than 4 guys drinking beer plus James. Plus it’s cool to hear them in a more unfiltered environment. Except Schmidt. He’s always unfiltered.
They’ve always had guests and the steady ones are great (Kyle H, Riley, Hobbs, Palmer’s, Colter, and Kyle S when he was occasional). They all bring great and unique perspectives and when it’s once a year it keeps things mixed up well.

I think the biggest thing with the negativity is that we all want a title, but sample is more focused on the deficiencies all the time. We get it there is flaws, but acting like a scorned gf before the other shoe has dropped gets old. It’s as he is trying to insulate himself from the hurt before it happens. That’s a resigned sort of fandom. Especially his intense highly emotional rants that take over the pod. Pointing out problems is fine, but beating the same drum gets old.

It was better when sample was occasional and the core guys had reasonable pros and cons discussions and it was a fun listen even in some down seasons. Luke just follows Kyle down the rabbit hole now and then what’s the point. This isn’t just a last few weeks kind of thing, but goes back half the season or more.

I'm going to offer feedback that others can confirm by rewatching the past four games, if they so desire. You can take this for what's it's worth and I'm sure the coaches are coaching to it and the players are working on correcting it.

1. Secondary is still plagued by missed assignments and I have seen this on multiple occasions in the last four weeks. Sometimes we get burned like the second touchdown by the Cats. Sometimes our pressure pushes the QB out of the pocket before they can recognize it. I know we are working with newer guys in the secondary because of injuries so it's likely a result of inexperience. I'm hoping we get this cleaned up/get guys back before the 2nd round game.
2. Offensive line has people standing around looking for someone to block after someone crosses their face and runs free to Ah yat or the ball carrier. Still need to work on passing off rushers on stunts/twists. It's getting better but still needs work.

I disagree on Sample. I enjoy his take. It provides a nice counterbalance to Brints incessant sugar coating, lol.

Id confirm these two assessments. Improvement in both areas, but still room for growth.

1) can be solved by not running a super complicated defensive scheme that takes years to be able to operate. That’s been beaten to death by many on this board.
2) that’s coaching and attitude. Very concerning. My old coach used to yell at us to “find some work, dammit!” I would like the effort of that guy from UO that blocked a cat player into the ground and was celebrated by his teammate who scored only to have Dan Lanning say it was the wrong guy. THATS attitude.

The pod is great and I don’t think they go hard enough.

Those who are critical are the ones who truly love UM.

Being content and complacent is a program killer in today’s landscape.

This program and this university’s success is more important than your feelings.

DONT BE TIMID AND WEAK.

Interestingly enough, they're all critical when warranted.

It's just some believe that an 11-1, #3 seed who was an unfortunate bounce of the football from 12-0 and yet another trip to the tile game doesn't deserve constant criticism.

I for one know that more Montana kids is worth 4 or more points.

they are weak and always have been. Brint has deep ties to the community and he can only go so far.To far and you don't to get a free ride on the Griz flight to watch the panda bowl. If you could get Frank it would be better but Frank is not getting paid to entertain people on Egriz. He is getting paid to ask tough questions like why are we rotating centers when it's clear that one is having a hard time playing at that position.

So Schmidt is still living in his past??
Or is he playing the role of calling out the issues on the team to be a know it all??
How was his relationship with Hauck?
I don’t listen to the GFP because I feel they lik think they are more important than they really are.
For the record, thats the first thumbs down ive ever given.

I generally really enjoy Andrew's takes on pretty much the whole of Griz football, but one thing that kind of bugs me about the whole The Standard™ stuff, especially regarding beating the cats and winning conference championships, is how he seems to have selective memory about what the conference was like back when he played.

A few bits of context that people probably forgot or never knew to begin with, starting with the record vs. the cats:

His teams went 4-1 vs. Montana State when he was playing. In those 5 years, the cats were ranked:
Not Ranked (Win in 2004), #18 (Loss in 2005), #10 (Win in 2006), NR (Win in 2007), NR (Win in 2008)

In Bobby's other 2 seasons, the cats were #21 (Loss in 2003), and NR (Win in 2009).

In Bobby's second stint, the cats have been:
#17 (Loss), #4 (Loss), #2 (Win), #4 (Loss), #9 (Win), #2 (Loss), and the #2 seed (Loss).

It's never been harder for the Griz to beat the cats. This is the best they've ever been over a 7 year period.

Two of Hauck's teams won the Big Sky in his first stint with 2 conference losses (2003 and 2005), and two prior teams also won the conference with 2 losses (1998 and 2002).

No team has won a share of the Big Sky title with more than 1 loss since 2005, mostly due to the fact that the conference scheduling became unbalanced with so many additional teams.
The Griz have had 2-loss conference seasons in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2019, and 2021 without winning the title.

In fact, this year's team is the only Griz team since 1989 that had just 1 conference loss and did not win the conference, all the other ones did (1995, 1999, 2004, 2008, and 2023). All of those teams needed other Big Sky teams to help them out by beating the other top teams.

From 1998 until 2010, no Big Sky teams other than Montana made it to the semifinals or better, ever.

Since 2010, 3 Big Sky teams other than Montana have made the semis or better 11 total times.

You could say that this is because the FCS is watered down, and while I admit that's true, the Big Sky was much weaker back when Montana was winning conference championships every year.

Again, I generally agree with what Andrew says, and there's no reason we should accept mediocrity. The goals are the goals, and they should be.

But, like Sammy Akem and Keenan Curran in their show today, the tone he uses implying that it's a personal failure of the players and coaches to have let the standard sink so low when plenty of the older teams had it easier and got better breaks, sometimes winning the conference by sheer luck, rubbed me the wrong way.
He still thinks the scats are ass.

Haven’t won a championship since 2001. Everything and everyone is on the table.

The good coaches are the ones who who coach harder when the team is winning. Keeps the kids focused on the prize and not believing the hype. Confident, not cocky and full of themselves. I think this is right where the Griz are right now.

Bobby hauck going to Oklahoma state makes me want to throw up. I’m a firm believer that he has what it takes to win here. Maybe we could use a new strength coach or coordinator change up, but not head man. Hauck is the guy for the job here at UM
