This week's GFP with Andrew Schmidt

There was mention during the pod that Bobby is being linked to the Oklahoma state job. That was the first I’ve heard of it, has that been shared anywhere else at all?
I have this same question too because I can’t find any crumb trail on X that would hint at Bobby Hauck being a possible frontrunner for Oklahoma State

Thanks we are really important. Maybe listen to this one and see what you can infer about Schmidt
What’s to infer. His foray into law/player rep makes total sense with his egocentrism. He should just forsake the kids that are such a burden and switch his career again, into the world of coaching and show all griz nation how schmidtacular he is. His schtick is actually tiresome. Almost makes Kyle’s ranting and raving seem bearable. Just get in the damn dunk tank Andy.

I long for the days when it was just a FEW buddies having beers and cussing and discussing, but it’s morphed into something beyond what made it special. Mike used to be the most worked up about things, but he’s almost become the voice of reason. The pod used to help make it through a long work week, but now it’s content I rarely finish. Maybe it’s the tone and a worked up Kyle and Luke that makes it less enjoyable. I’m not a sugar coater, but if you can’t find the joy in an in an 11-0 start to the season, it’s hard to believe a cat win would have made it more enjoyable.

I generally really enjoy Andrew's takes on pretty much the whole of Griz football, but one thing that kind of bugs me about the whole The Standard™ stuff, especially regarding beating the cats and winning conference championships, is how he seems to have selective memory about what the conference was like back when he played.

A few bits of context that people probably forgot or never knew to begin with, starting with the record vs. the cats:

His teams went 4-1 vs. Montana State when he was playing. In those 5 years, the cats were ranked:
Not Ranked (Win in 2004), #18 (Loss in 2005), #10 (Win in 2006), NR (Win in 2007), NR (Win in 2008)

In Bobby's other 2 seasons, the cats were #21 (Loss in 2003), and NR (Win in 2009).

In Bobby's second stint, the cats have been:
#17 (Loss), #4 (Loss), #2 (Win), #4 (Loss), #9 (Win), #2 (Loss), and the #2 seed (Loss).

It's never been harder for the Griz to beat the cats. This is the best they've ever been over a 7 year period.

Two of Hauck's teams won the Big Sky in his first stint with 2 conference losses (2003 and 2005), and two prior teams also won the conference with 2 losses (1998 and 2002).

No team has won a share of the Big Sky title with more than 1 loss since 2005, mostly due to the fact that the conference scheduling became unbalanced with so many additional teams.
The Griz have had 2-loss conference seasons in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2019, and 2021 without winning the title.

In fact, this year's team is the only Griz team since 1989 that had just 1 conference loss and did not win the conference, all the other ones did (1995, 1999, 2004, 2008, and 2023). All of those teams needed other Big Sky teams to help them out by beating the other top teams.

From 1998 until 2010, no Big Sky teams other than Montana made it to the semifinals or better, ever.

Since 2010, 3 Big Sky teams other than Montana have made the semis or better 11 total times.

You could say that this is because the FCS is watered down, and while I admit that's true, the Big Sky was much weaker back when Montana was winning conference championships every year.

Again, I generally agree with what Andrew says, and there's no reason we should accept mediocrity. The goals are the goals, and they should be.

But, like Sammy Akem and Keenan Curran in their show today, the tone he uses implying that it's a personal failure of the players and coaches to have let the standard sink so low when plenty of the older teams had it easier and got better breaks, sometimes winning the conference by sheer luck, rubbed me the wrong way.

Love the perspective and context absolutely matters - which you nailed good sir!

Andrew was a bit more than a backup. The Griz opened in '08 at CPSLO, a top 10 team with several truly fine players on both sides of the ball. Andrew was the starting RB and turned in 145 yards and a score to lead the way to a 30-28 win for the 14-2 team that made it to the NC game. He was the man until Chase emerged and relegated him to a backup role. He ran for 466 and 2 TDs for the season and added 6 receptions for 42 yards. Enough to keep Chase fresh for the deep run to the NC game. He was a very good player; it took Chase to make him a backup.

Eye of the Griz already said it but it bears repeating- this is the best recap and a great perspective of the last 30 years. I hope Andrew Schmidt reads it.

Wait… are you saying Schmidt is… gasp… a BOOMER??? He’s making a “kids are lazy these days” argument, lol.

All joking aside, he represents the far fringe of Grizdom. He’s provocative, but has good insight. Someone said the pod stopped being a bunch of dudes talking about the game, but at the same time, I think it’s discussion got a bit more nuanced. Sample’s contributions bring some journalistic analysis to it and it’s forced everyone to be a better student of the game. But there is no denying their love for the Griz.

I think most all of you are well versed enough in the world famous trash talker and backup RB Schmidt to know how parts of this one goes. It's a wide array of opinions that largely spans thoughts out further than just the game itself. We do talk plenty on the game, the FCS playoffs, and hit all the questions we had.

You guys were spot on about the lazy recruiting by the Griz coaches. The Griz didn't get Junior either. He left only because of a coaching change. This team has no chance to win a national Title with its defense.

I love the pod and cannot wait to listen each week. But I agree with trip-sevens that the tone has grown more negative recently. And I too tend to enjoy the pod more when there aren't guests, with the exception of Riley.

This post is a home run.

I wonder if the growing negativity on the pod is a reflection of the overall mood of the fanbase? We see where the Griz are, and we see where they need to be, but it’s always just out of reach. It’s healthy and normal to question things and get frustrated about not meeting stated goals or “The Standard.”

We’ve always been a mix of negative Nancys and positive Pollys on this board. The pod is like looking in a mirror, if the mirror is way more rational and reserved. You gotta have the troll that shows up to spice things up, just like here. I love the guests, tho. Sammy, Coulter, Riley, Sample Kyle, etc. It brings in more perspective than 4 guys drinking beer plus James. Plus it’s cool to hear them in a more unfiltered environment. Except Schmidt. He’s always unfiltered.
