This team has no fire

“It's not a huge loss, it's still early in the season,” Tinkle said. “We're 2-3 and teams are getting beat at home. I don't want to make a habit of it. We need to right the ship and protect our home court. There's 11 games left. We're fine.”

From today's Missoulian...I respectfully disagree with Tinkle's assessment. The Griz aren't "fine"...

They say the first step is admitting you have a problem...

Let's see.... they have played 18 games. I gotta believe that even me and the rest of the fat old bald guys on my block would show some improvement after 18 games.

The hope is not dead, but without some event triggering some passion, it looks like a long season.

I (we all do) love the Griz, but this is bewildering. We are losing more games than we are winning this year, a far cry from last seasons dominating year. The loss of the Colstrip Carbine and that other explosive guard from Washington state has really hurt more than I was thinking it would. We lack a lot of leadership and firepower without those two this year. :twocents:

Someone else is gonna say it if i don't but I think most would agree it isn't the loss of these two that's impacted this team the most, it's that third guy who left.

I have to agree here. Larry was a BIG loss and Brad too for that matter. Those guys can flat coach and Wayne....well Wayne is either scared to death or out of his comfort zone. Far too much patting people on the back and rubbing their necks....No emotion....come on coach get into the game.....you are being a fan at this point.

And speaking of fans. I have had it with this place. The students need to be given the east courtside bleachers again....it's clear to me that people who sit on the courtside on the floor do not deserve to be there. This isn't even basketball anymore....it distracts from the game when a crowd is so consistantly bad.

Amen Griztastic. Not too long ago I was one of a few disappointed in the fans and the atmosphere. After the ISU game, I have seen more EGRIZZERS echoing in as well. Glad to see it is not just me, and others too feel our "home" court is not what it needs to be as for fan support. I am not just disappointed in the low attendance, but at the lack of emotion by fans, even when we are playing our best. Do not tell me our fans no longer are interested. Kind of amazing how loud Dahlberg still gets when any referee makes a bad call!!!!! Come on "EVERYONE STEP IT UP AS A FAN!!!!!" This team needs the fans more than ever for support! If you cannot do that, please quit criticizing the coaches and players for their emotion, bad play, not meeting expectations etc. Many of the fans are every bit as guilty of all those things as the players the last few years!!!!!!!!! (Just the truth!)

Before the game Tinks said that since ISU played zone that they would have to drive and get the ball inside. Well, 37 threes is not exactly sticking to the game plan. Whose fault is that? I don't know but if the coach does not have control of his team then something is off and needs a good kick in the arse to get it back on track.

I get a little tired of people always offering kudos to Andrew. He is a great player, but he is struggling too. Last night he had 4 rebounds--- his ISU counterpart had 13. He had 6 assists-- that is great but to be expected playing against a 2-3 collasping zone. He essentially was triple teamed every time he did get the ball in the low block. Every player is inconsistent. Ellis struggles, Matt D is up and down--- Jordan. Can it be a team dynamic thing. Coaches are all about getting the most out of players.

I think the panic button has been pressed a little too early in Griz Country.

Montana needs to step it up on defense and Strait needs to show some balls inside. He needs to get more physical--seal his man and go strong to the basket. He only took 7 shots in 30+ minutes. If Montana could even have posed a threat down low--that may have been enough--especially at home.

ISU is comfortable knowing that if they could force teams into 20+ 3pt attempts--they would win many games. You knew the Griz couldn't sustain the three point barrage of the first five minutes--the Griz knew it--and the Bengal knew it.

Also--when a team like ISU is going on a run--commit some hard fouls. Rape them defensively in the post--and force ISU to beat you from deep. The threat from Ofoegbu down low created wide open looks outside for the Bengals. It was really all ISU needed to get things rolling offensively.

Now in fairness to the Bengals--they have bought into O'Brien's defense first philosophy and have embraced it. They are good at it and they aren't quick to panic and abandon it. This team sticks together and understands that the opponents will always make runs.

We Bengal fans didn't expect this from ISU and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. But I think things started this fall with a clever little coaching trick. From what I understand--O'Brien blindfolded the entire team and took them 10 miles south of town. He made them get out in the middle of BFE and drove away. They found their way home and I think they relied on each other and learned about one another in the process.

It also helps to have a player like David Schroeder playing for you. The kid has had three ACL tears--but still manages to easily be the best athlete in the BSC. He is a leader--which brings me to the point--who is the leader for the Griz?

Anyhow--I have probably wore out my welcome here. But I still home to mingle with some of you at the BSC tourney (in Pocatello) this March.

I was present at the circus last night-it was shameful. It was
the worst exhibition of trying to run a zone offense I have ever
seen. Zone offense is quite simple. It requires a high post, a low
post and 3 other guys who can pass the ball. Other than an
occasional dribble penetration to set up the outside shot dribbling
is nada. Second you have to fast break before the defense gets
set up. Third about 3-4 guys need to crash the boards when
a shot goes up to offset the other teams presence in the key.
I have to question whether anyone on the Griz coaching
staff knows this.
Everyone talks about lack of leadership-last time I checked
the head coach was the leader.
Lastly, don't blame Strait-he was open at least 7-8 if not more
times and didn't get the pass. When he came to UM his forte
was the inside-outside game. He shot 90% from the FT and was
a serious threat from 3pt range. He bulked up and went into
the post because big John blew out his knee.
This team is a political wreck; the players know who should
be playing-Simms is no longer in school. There is talk of more
leaving. With 9 out of 11 players returning this year should
have been a walk in the park. Paging Larry K.

Mtgriz - I am not down on Tinks at all. I still think he will be a very good coach. However, in my opinion, he needs to quit being a cheerleader, and take control. I think they need to have some fear of him. But I am still a Tinks fan.

I would agree! That role was fine last year, but now he is the CEO. Players need to know that he is capable of lowering the boom. One of the other assistants need to take over the "players coach role"

Still though, it will come, I have no doubt, before Tinkle is done he will be mentioned with the Morrill and Montgomery's of the Montana basketball coaches.

For some weird reason, the current basketball team situation reminds me of the way we have been trying to fight the Iraq war lately. Hmmmm.....

first BengalCub thanks for the encouragement...O'Brien has done a hellof a job..so far,,,but I think ballhog was accurate in some of his observations...something just is not clicking?,,,do they have a gameplan and can they execute it? As an out of state fan I have watched games and listen on radio,,,and even thru the air waves ..they seem tight, disorganized, and turn over proned? if it is not coaching,,,then, yeah, it must be the fans fault??? Come on ...get it together and play a full game!....anytime... over 20 3's is stupid...fans? will be there, but if this ballclub is needing them to turn the corner ,,,then it will be a much longer season...the Griz have made some great turnarounds as the tourney got closer in the past...maybe I too should just wait & hope?....difficult to say the least....

HUH?? That makes 000000 sense. :werd:

HUH?? That makes 000000 sense

OK, I forgot some of them, but...

1. The gameplan was (is) difficult to execute.
2. The opposition is tougher than expected.
3. The parties coaching (governing) would rather be liked than kick some butt.
4. We can't seem to win with superior forces
5. Many of the most vocal think the coach (President) isn't doing a good job.
6. All the critics think they have a better answer.
7. Everybody is reminicing about the good old days when coach K (choose Clinton or Reagan) was in charge.
8. We kicked some serious butt in the beginning, but the opposition made a comeback.
9. We were overly confident of our superior talent.
10. The fans started off gung-ho and supportive, but as the contest dragged on became disenfranchised.

Seems like there were some different ones, but it is late and I'm getting tired. Like I said, it was a weird thought.

Best Wishes

Well, it appears that the fire has returned, a good OT win for the Griz against a good team, I wish they would've gone 2-0 against ISU and WSU but 1-1 is good and I'm glad to see the team playing with renewed energy
