There is invariably a certain few that will troll and they troll other posters regularly as well. You know who they are. There's about five or six of them (depending on alter egos), and they regularly infest threads to insult other posters, try and show how clever they are, and in the case of some, always announce how smart they are without ever offering an ounce of proof. And in many cases, it isn't even directed at other posters, its for the sole purpose of derailing threads. They suck the air out of egriz. It happens on thread after thread. The recent examples ought to be pretty obvious to you. Apparently they aren't. That's something you ought to reflect on. You are in large part responsible, and can't manage to take responsibility. Geez, I love it when somebody won't do their job and then say "it's your fault." If any of my athletes ever took that attitude, well ....

You let these things get out of control, and then like somebody's third grade teacher blame the kid that punches back. Yeah, when you sit there and let it go on and on, I punch back. Now you whine "but you do it toooooo!" No wonder this place seems like an unsupervised playground all the time.

And that's the problem. And you're hearing it on this thread, and from others as well, and you don't get that either.

So, what's your role here? Maintain an intelligent forum for discussion of Griz athletics, or a playground for trolls? I don't particularly care one way or another, but don't be a gd hypocrite about it. Fish or cut bait. As this thread suggests, many of us would like to know, and plan accordingly.

I enjoy this board. I use it almost every day to get my Griz fix/info. I do not miss Alpha or Growler. Several posters lately have become quite tiresome with their constant bickering and full page posts that seems to derail almost every thread. But, there is also some good football discussion. I just try to pass through the crap.

I know it's an extra hassle, but one does have the "Foe" function for posters you find particularly obnoxious. I use it sparingly, because even jerks and a**holes sometimes have something useful to say. But here's a thought -- although I have no idea if/how it could be implemented. We would need two things: (1) People would have to be willing to use the "Foe" function to blot out the idiot and jerks. (2) There would need to be some automated way to count how many "Foe" hits a particular User Name accumulated in some pre-defined span of time ... which would get them flagged for review by the Mods. Not perfect, even if do-able, but a step in the right direction.

I use the Foe button. The only problem is that if someone quotes one of your "foes," you then have to see their drivel. I'd like to see an enhancement to the foe button to enable it to also block them when quoted.

So when you say, "can't manage to take responsibility.." sorry chief, I'm not you and grizindabox's babysitter, but what I can do is make rid of both of you.. so I guess that would be taking responsibility in getting rid of the trolling problem. There's lots of people that have opinions on how this place should be moderated, your opinion is different than other people's opinion. And.. for some odd reason, I haven't seen you (or anyone else) step up and offer to be a moderator to make this place better.. instead you'd rather just whine like a child with another tl;dr paragraph. There's four mods on this place and we're all really busy people.

This is a good example. The usual troll, trolls again here, unsolicited. Just as he did on the Cal Poly thread and innumerable other threads, and as he does with other posters as well. But what do you do about it?

Instead of doing ANYTHING about it, you accuse the recipient, thanks for the insult. Mtgrizrule is exactly right: the moderation on this forum is completely screwed up: backwards to what "moderation" ordinarily means. People are sick of it. Thanks for illuminating the point so succinctly. I couldn't have made the point better myself.

So.. I do nothing about it. I believe people have just as big of a problem with your dealing with users on this forum than they do with your counterpart, grizindabox. So, you actually can't produce an example of where I "initiated" anything, but then finally resort to comments like "babysitting" and "whining like a child," immediately after you just got done doing so yourself. If nothing else, you need a self-awareness gene.

Gosh, I was really busy too, but took lots of time to discuss the Jordan Johnson case for your forum, from the standpoint of a knowledgeable observer. I've done that many times over on myriad other topics of interest to Athletics and to the University of Montana, which I've been formally associated with for 46 years now, in one capacity or another. But, gosh, I took the time. Time you complain you don't have for your own forum. If you don't, then give it up.

I can listen all day to your excuses about why you don't want to "moderate," and that you seem to think that "excuses" absolve responsibility. But, thanks for the ad hominem attack. Gee, there hasn't been enough of that from Box and HH the past two days has there? And you jump right in. That's a problem for any forum when the Mods ARE the trolls. If you don't encourage respect, you're not going to get any.

YOU posted a set of rules a couple of months ago. I think that Mtgrizrule was speaking to that. If you're going to have rules, enforce them, otherwise you go the way of many forums that permit unrestricted trolling and personal attacks from trolls like Box and HH. I've spent the last two days trying to talk about Cal Poly and the Krakauer case. The trolling has been non-stop. Finally people are stepping up; this thread is partially the result in case you didn't notice.

Others have commented explicitly on why many have quit posting, why knowledgeable people drift away, and why the proportion of trolls keeps increasing. Your whining about all your problems doesn't solve the problem of why people leave your forum and as it increasingly becomes just a series of troll threads and train wrecks. You encourage the trolls to thrive, in large part by joining in with them.

If you think "adults" want to be part of that, you have a misguided view of adulthood. "Adults" aren't your problem here. You don't have to "babysit" any of them. They're leaving or are gone. It doesn't matter what I think you should do. The facts speak for themselves. Stop trying to blame everybody else, it's you. If you want egriz to be what you ostensibly wanted it to be, step up. If not, it will continue to deteriorate.

And all your "babies" can have a home that you created for them. And you can figure out then what "babysitting" is really all about.

Well, read any number of threads. I comment on thread topics. I've never pursued grizindabox or helenahandbasket from thread to thread. However, that is something they have done consistently for the past year now, and not just me. It is what they do here. But look at the Cal Poly thread. Look at the Semore thread today. Who is actually trolling there? There is no doubt. None whatsoever.

I punch back because I do not suffer fools gladly, and since the "mods" refuse to moderate their friends, yes, I respond to trolling because there is immense satisfaction in calling out trolls and watching them tie themselves in knots because they aren't nearly as smart as they think they are, or because they thought they were immune like most internet bullies always think they are.

Is your real question "should forums allow trolls to just run free?"

Or that those that despise trolls should not respond to them?

How about "ban obvious trolls?" How about "ban ad hominem attacks?" Of, that's right, those are already forum rules. Odd we are having this conversation then, isn't it?

Yes, note HH's usual approach: "serious question," and then asks one that is ridiculous. And then when it is answered, he lies about what was actually said, puts words in posters mouths, and then accuses them of something they did not say. Then, when that is pointed out, he says "see, you won't answer the question" about something that is not, in fact a question, bur rather a series of "gotcha" efforts based nearly always entirely on fabricated statements. That's trolling.

You act like you are not part of the problem. You need to understand that you are a troll in other people's eyes. You are not the adult you think you are and you post like the rules don't apply to you. Just look at how you are treating Mr Titleist. It is funny you think he plays favorites, I have been around him and Alpha drinking and listening to them talk about these boards and Brad treats you more than fair. You don't add much just snark.

I've seen threads like this on other forums/boards. People bitch about trollers, dominators, and people bitching, apparently for the hell of it. Anyone notice the [!] button, top right of every post? If you want the mods to act on your concerns, just click that little button; it'll get their attention. Or, do as others do: ignore threads/posts that bore/anger/disgust you.
