This place

Titlest once asked me if I was volunteering when I said this place needed a shakedown. And my answer now is the same as it was then; gladly

Strike 1: One month ban
Strike 2: Permanent IP ban

And if Chris has not built IP lookup functionality into the admin screens, I suggest that be prioritized. Otherwise certain venomous posters will always return.

No one gets special treatment. The same abusing idiots, trolls and select MSU/EWU/whoever fans would weed themselves out soon enough anyways.

Treat eGriz access like a privilege

You share an IP address with two other eGriz users. Should I drop an IP ban and take care of all three of you? Doing IP bans is tricky business. I only do it if the address comes from Russia or China because they're most likely spam. Plus, with dynamic IP addresses that doesn't even fix the problem.. or the fact you can post from your phone, PC at work, PC/tablet at home, etc. If you have infinite amount of time (and whatever else) on your hands like Growler, you just go out and register hundreds of email addresses and come back all the time.

That said, we're open to making this place better.. but perm bans are hard to do (like, literally). For me personally, time is pretty thin nowadays to cruise message boards and clean up grown ass adults behavior online. I think I had maybe three full weeks over the summer at home, the rest was .. well, not being in front of the internet. It's also walking a fine line.. we mod too hard, you guys bitch we're being draconian assholes, we mod too little then we're letting everyone get away with everything. Which way do you guys want it?

I realize that its only a partial solution and not the complete means-to-an-end because of scenarios like what you just described. But taking away home PCs for the less tech-literate would be a step in the right direction.

As for time constraints, maybe that's a sign to increase the size of the mod squad.

And yes, I want draconian. The alternative is failing. eGriz should be a privilege, not a right, and the bitchers will just have to take it and like it. If they don't, they can go start more maroonblood's that no one will visit.

You once told me moderating eGriz is like herding cats. Time to euthanize the cats.

This is a good thread. You can see a range of what people would like to see on this forum, from anarchy to draconian control. Personally, like some of you I miss some of the good posters we had that left because there were a few that treat it as their personal playground. Titlist is right that we walk a fine line. Don't know about favoritism because all the eGrizers that I have met are good and respectful posters. This is something we will need to discuss as we take the corporate jet to the French Riviera for the annual moderator's retreat.

Seriously, if you have an opinion or a solution that you don't want to voice in public, feel free to pm me. Try to be a little more creative than "Eat shit and die". Thanks again to posters that are offering well thought out opinions.

What needs to happen is that the mods need to ban obvious trolls bozeman junior college, ewoo and undsu. There are some very good posters from those schools who add value and discussion to the board. Then there are guys who do nothing but troll. One of them posted right above me. Get rid of them. Make eGriz great again.

Agreed. I think the majority of rival fans who post on eGriz are pretty chill, and know that they will take some shots here and there. FormerEag is a total bro. As are marceag, RJones, yeager, wbtfg, SACCAT, etc. It's the dickholes like Buffs2011 and Collielover3 that muck up this place.

I enjoy this board. I use it almost every day to get my Griz fix/info. I do not miss Alpha or Growler. Several posters lately have become quite tiresome with their constant bickering and full page posts that seems to derail almost every thread. But, there is also some good football discussion. I just try to pass through the crap.

I know it's an extra hassle, but one does have the "Foe" function for posters you find particularly obnoxious. I use it sparingly, because even jerks and a**holes sometimes have something useful to say. But here's a thought -- although I have no idea if/how it could be implemented. We would need two things: (1) People would have to be willing to use the "Foe" function to blot out the idiot and jerks. (2) There would need to be some automated way to count how many "Foe" hits a particular User Name accumulated in some pre-defined span of time ... which would get them flagged for review by the Mods. Not perfect, even if do-able, but a step in the right direction.

Ok, I found the "Foe" tag. (Or was that toe fag, I forget.) Will it block everything that person posts? Also, to all the good posters from the past that have stopped, post again. Perhaps the good can overwhelm that bad.

I personally find this a much better board without Alplha - his arrogance is unbelievable (along with his Bison love) and have not seen him post anything of value in several years. That being said I do not know the man, nor have I played the game --------but I come on here to learn as much as i can about Griz football. I also find it irritating that some posters need to have the last word, no matter how many pages they go on. Although I myself would rather see Draconian mods, I can live with a lot of the bs on here. eGriz is a privilege, not a right!

The forums are much better without people like alpha and growler but there are still blatant trolls who ruin threads and derail conversation. The foe button is fine but when posters like alpha or growler constantly started/derailed every conversation, ignoring posts doesn't fix the issue.

I have an extremely hard time believing that permanently banning accounts who are clear trolls is difficult. I'm not sure how this forum is modded but the elimination of an account should be an easy thing to do.

Surprisingly, it's not. You can drop an IP ban, but there's multiple ways to get around that (ie: use your phone, at work, sometimes your IP at home doesn't stay the same, etc). And in some cases if you drop an IP ban it can have an unintended splash consequence.. like as I mentioned above, the IP that Brock Landers was posting from had two other eGrizzers (good posters) attached to it. Back when AOL was a thing Growler's IP address used to be attached to about 10 different eGrizzers (that weren't one of numbnuts' dozen accts) that were regular posters. You can perm ban an acct, but then you go out and register a new email address and new forum acct, and bam, back in business. Same with perm banning an email address.

It's tough to be real granular with the software the board provides. We've been able to head off some of people who are perm bans by approving their post first post (something we put in place about a year ago to head off spammers and perm bans) but that's not always fool proof either. Plus with that method it adds a lot of overhead for the mods to deal with but we still do it.

Yes.

Meaning the masses want it both ways and will never be happy.

I've perused a few FBS fan forums and, while I find egriz to occasionally be off its rocker, it's mostly reasonable compared to, say, an SEC board.

Growler is a piece of work but nothing in comparison to my all-time favorite wing nut - Lakesbison or whatever his name was. What goes on here could always be worse. The mods here do a good job of finding that happy medium between freedom of speech and harassment/threats.
