This is a Rebuilding Year, and I Like It

This year kinda feels like the 2010 FB season to me. Kinda overachieved the prior 2 years and now, meh. Like Chase, it sucks to see Kareem end his career like this.

given the strength of our program combined with the weakness of our conference, it doesn't feel like we should ever have to re-build, just re-load. plus it's hard to say you're rebuilding when you lose your starting center and one of the best players in the history of the program.

this seems to me more like disaster re-construction.

We only lost 1 real, real good, starter from last year, Will Cherry

Coleman was not a starter- but missed
Matthis was injured and missed

We have fallen alot for only one missed starter

Actually we lost 3 starters.

Ward started all 24 (out of 32) games that he played in, so we had him most of the season. Cherry actually missed more games than Ward did due to injury.

Coleman was a starter more often than he was not. He started 18 of the 32 games. He also was a good outside shooter and a good rebounder who averaged over 20 minutes a game. He would have been big for us this year I think.

We really miss all 3 of those players a lot this year. Ward and Cherry were expected losses though since they were graduating. Coleman of course wasn't. Toss in a couple other posts who likely would have helped this year (Wiley and Kovacevic) and you can see why we are struggling in the post a bit. Recruiting a talented big guy to a low mid-major conference is tough enough without losing 3 of them in the past 2 years due to various issues (not graduation).

enjoying you posts, potomac.

What??

Ward was a rock. He's the guy we miss the most. He may be one of the most under-rated, underappreciated players ever to don a Griz uniform. The dude did everything well. He wasn't flashy; he didn't pound his chest and say "look at me". He simply went out, did his job, and carried his team with heart and soul.

Agree, loved Ward's play.

Everett Griz saw the same Ward I did for 4 years. And believe he started at least 3 of those. Great shooting touch from all ranges...probably most impressive in 10 to 15 foot range.

Alway seemd a little undersized and occasionally had issues with post defense and rebounding against bigger guys. But those "issues" wouldn't be compared to this year's replacements.

Don't get excited Everett after all Ward only started 2 more games last year than Will did. EdG must have forgotten that. I agree with you that Ward was under-rated. He was the glue, holding the team together, and that everything he did he did well. I am not slighting Will he is a once-in-a-lifetime player and it took him awhile to come back to form. However he was more the inspirational leader who led with emotion. Both are needed and they are both missed a lot.

On the subject of rebuilding, I am more interested in reloading than I am in rebuilding. We need to have backups that step in with very little loss in performance and the remaining starters step up. That is what I mean be reloading. In my mind we have had a significant drop off between this year and the last few as the record bears out.

The Griz would make the conference tourney if teams were selected today. The Griz are clawing back. After the Cat game, UM will have more games at home than on the road (6 of 10)

Seems like I remember he was much maligned at times on this board in the earlier part of his career. I'm just too lazy to look it up.

I agree Matthis will be missed,I agree most under-rated. He did everything well with lots and lost of heart

One of my favorite players of all time

Don't buy season tickets for rebuilding years

Nobody buys season tickets anyways....

3 out of 4 Big Sky titles and they are still averaging 3500 fans a game.

Its a fucking disgrace and I hope Tinkle leaves once his son graduates

If he is your favorite player, you oughta know it's Mathias.

I think Tinkle has proven himself to be a damn good coach, but why the this staff can't get their post players to play is beyond belief. I would like to know what the players think regarding this team/season.
