Boy the last several weeks have been interesting - lots of stuff going on with Griz athletics and the University of Montana. Sexual assault allegations, the firing of the head football coach and athletic director. Hiring of interem coach and AD. Missoula County Attorney and Missoula PD in the spotlight. Justice Dept and Dept of Education on the scene. O-line coach leaving for the NFL. Interesting media reporting of the issues. FOI requests. UM VP under fire. National news stories.
Quite the hectic s*%# storm.
Through it all, for me at least, things are good. I am still proud to be associated with the University of Montana and proud to be a Grizzly football fan.
As was stated in the Tribune article about the BBQ - the program is about the kids that invest so much time and energy into continuing the pride and tradition of UM football. Sometimes I think that we, the fans and supporters of the program forget this. Due to being loyal fans and supporters, we tend to think that maybe we have more skin in the game that we really do. In a lot of cases, the quest to beat Montana State, win the BSC and National Championship becomes intensely personal. We try to find some validation or bragging rights based on the success of our football team. I am no different - I love to have bragging rights for a year when the Griz beat the Cats. We revel in our successes and slumber in our defeats.
Sometimes the fans desire for success clouds what intercollegiate athletics is about - while we purchase tickets and some make generous donations to the program lets not forget about the time, effort and sacrafice that the kids put into the program. The commitment made by the players is what results in the success that we all enjoy. Buying tickets and making donations should not be done to beat our chests, it should be done to support the program and the kids that make up that program. The players and coaches hard work, combined with our support will continue the success that we have enjoyed for so long.
I have been associated with Griz football since the mid 80's. I am proud to say that I am a fan of the University of Montana. We have great kids in the program. I make no apologies and I will continue to support the program.
