The Student Section

U of M needs to look at getting rid of the winter intersession that runs the first three weeks in January and just start the spring semester earlier. My son who goes to MSU (but is a big Griz fan) started on January 12th, my daughter started back at U of M on January 24th. MSU just gives way more days off during the spring semester where as U of M has hardly any. Maybe the new president will look at this.

Huh? YouR argument for getting rid of wintersession is "msu gives way more days off"....???

Bizarre

No, my argument for getting rid of wintersession is that it makes the winter break way to long for the normal college kids who do not go to the wintersession. Five and a half weeks is crazy. I say get rid of the wintersession, start school the second week in January (still a month off) and move the students back to courtside. I know that is probably not going to happen but being in the Zoo from 80 to 84 was a blast back then.

What the administration needs to do is start by giving a quarter of the courtside seats back to the students, for example sections 110 & 111, and keep the north bleacher seats. That way we can get some atmosphere without having to move too many ticket-holders.

Are sections 105 - 107 really for students? I don't really recall students sitting there ever.

Yes, 105-107 was for students. they didn't put any chairs in those sections as they expected the students to stand up. But, the last few (maybe up to 5) years, they sold those seats to non-students due to lack of student fans.

Why does this keep popping into my head when I think of who and how the remodel was handled?

Bleh, if that is the case, then it makes more sense to move the season ticket holders to the ends and take both student sections and throw them along the side.

Just remove the seats on one side. Move those to the ends of the court. You lower those tickets to mid range ticket price I 100% promise the crowds will pay to sit there. This whole 1/2 of G.A roped for students is bull. No student should have to stand up there. This is their school. The pay for the tickets, they take time out of studies and work to relax at the game. I personally know 20-30 students who won't come to griz games because they will get stuck up in G.A.

Was watching Notre Dame at West Virginia and as it seems with most schools, there were the students on the side jumping up and down and cheering. Looked kinda like they did have a row of folding chairs/media in front of them like we do though, but still, students where they ought to be. What really irks me the more I think about it is how someone took something that wasn't broken and broke it. Not only wasn't it broken, we were one of the top schools in the nation for attendance(especially compared to city size). I worked in a restaurant that was doing fine and then got a new manager who ran it into the ground with her changes. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Being a Missoula native and raised on all things Grizzlies(I still bleed copper, not maroon :)), and then living away for 21 of the last 22 years, I had a couple of questions. When was the remodel and when were the students moved? I have followed the Griz from afar(even to the point of successfully finding a part of the house that my radio would pick up a Kalispell station all the way in Seattle) but just don't remember how or when this all went down. I went to my first game since the remodel(Griz-Bobcat game) and while I was impressed with some of the aspects of the new arena, there is one aspect that saddens me to the core. That is the student section not being on the sideline. Growing up watching that section and then in the mid '80's experiencing it for myself, it truly was something special. Watching the sold-out game last month was fun but one thing was missing. It had lost it heart. The students were always the center of the excitement and would get the crowd into it. Now, sharing the endzone with the band was like a mouse trying to do a lion's roar. The game was great, especially beating the cats but I sure was sad for what use to be and how someone could have ruined something so special. I don't even know if giving the seats back to the students would work because it looks like they are much further back(what's up with those folding chair seats? ) and seat probably half of what they used to(bring back the bleachers!). I really am just wondering who decided these changes. Will it ever get back to how it used to be? Or am I lamenting over a lost love. Maybe I just need to have a picture in my head of who to blame. I just know I am sure envious everytime I see a Husky game(where I am now) or Gonzaga or most other fan supported basketball programs. Thanks for letting me rant. :)

Remodel was during the 1998-99 season.

I sat in the student section during 1977-1982 years. Was great.

Most of the lost seats (around 2,000) from the remodel were the from the east and west side which are the most desirable for season ticket holders.

It will never be the same. If the students want any chance of regaining seating on the east side, they will likely have to pay higher student fees to make up for the lost revenue from season ticket holders.
I do not see that happening since Students turned down higher student fees for additional seating at football stadium.

You can keep dreaming. I certainly do. the student section was a riot during the 1978 - 1982 seasons. Even then I hated it a lot when they moved the student section during the 1978 Big Sky Tournament. the southeast lower section was sold to Boise State fans. Forgot what teams fans sat on the lower northeast section to. Pissed me off.
1974-till now, older than you.
You want fan support or the money.
Hell the fans who pay for those seats never show anyway.
Back in my day you had to get there at least 1 hour early to sit in the zoo.

God it was great.

Having attended U of M from 80-86. The ZOO was the place to be and cheer on the Griz. I couldn't believe it when they took away the student section... Some on here say its the student fault and they had their chance. I know having a winning BB program does help the attendance, but new freshmen coming onto campus needs to learn about the traditions of yelling at the opposing coaches and players and pumping up the Griz... Maybe looking 200 miles to the WEST and see Gonzaga's new gym... They definitely knew better than to get rid of student section, which IS A MAJOR HomeCourt advantage. I spoke to O'day about this two years ago, when they were trying to get the students a chance to show up or not.. Not enough showed up, so ODay couldn't push for the student section.. I explained to him that this would probably take a few years to get the Zoo tradition started going again. Aren't the college years supposed to drive you to become Great Alum and buy season tickets to all sports. Since I live in Washington State, I don't make it to too many bb games, but when I attended, I went to all and over half the Lady Griz. Put the Band back in the endzone, Students back into the Zoo (Yes you have to show up early to get the good seats) but in time, the FUN and Excitement will return..... Continuing the current program will not! Just my opinion, I love watching the student section at Football games having fun, but I haven't seen any of that at the Basket ball games.. As far as the Media seats and stats people, MOVE them and let the Cheerleaders back in front of student section. Home Court Rules... Just like 12 man in Football. Courtside Golden need to move to a BOX.. If the U like the current $$, then don't be disappointed if students don't show up in force..
