The Price of Change

I don't normally grab an entire article, but this one is short enough that just a link doesn't make much sense. Credit STATS FCS as the source, with Haley as the author.

(STATS) - The 2016 season at North Dakota was the best since the program moved to the FCS level for the 2008 season.

As far as the defending Big Sky co-champs are concerned, it was just a start.

The Fighting Hawks have been working during spring practice toward taking a bigger step in 2017. They wrap up spring drills Friday evening with their annual spring game inside the school's High Performance Center in Grand Forks.

"We accomplished some great things last season, but we left the field for the final time with a real bad taste in our mouths," said fourth-year coach Bubba Schweigert, whose team bowed out of the second round of the FCS playoffs against Richmond, finishing 9-3.

"We were proud of advancing to the FCS playoffs, but our goal and vision for this program is to advance in the playoffs, and, ultimately, be one of the top teams competing for a national title every season. We have a lot of work to do to get to that point."

With no changes in their coaching staff this offseason, the Fighting Hawks have had a smooth spring. One of the focuses has been on reworking a defense which lost five starters, although one of its returnees is senior safety Cole Reyes, the 2016 Big Sky defensive player of the year.

The offense is much more experienced, including third-year quarterback Keaton Studsrud as one of nine returning starters. The kickers and leading returner John Santiago also are back.

North Dakota will play three more seasons in the Big Sky before it moves to the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2020. However, this is the final season in which the Fighting Hawks are eligible for the Big Sky title. [My emphasis]
Strange way to do it, seems to me. Two years when their only goal will be to win enough games to get an at-large bid to the FCS playoffs.

I don't know for certain, but I would presume this is a league rule; state your intention to leave and you are not eligible the final two seasons.

I think you're right.

So they should ask the BSC to lay out a candy-**s schedule -- feasting on the soft touches and avoiding the toughies. Then they can (maybe) pile up wins for an at-large bid. :)

They should have to be an FCS independent and not dependent on a big sky schedule those two years, and it better not count as a league win for anyone to beat them in those years.

This is the part I'm fuzzy on as well. If they can't be considered for the Big Sky championship how are their
opponents win loss regarded in a tie breaker situation at the end of the year?

It has more to do with other BSC schools having them as a conference game on their schedules for the next couple years.

I am under the impression that they can win the Conference but can not get the automatic bid to the playoffs. If they win the conference, the bid would go to the next team in the standings.

Someone enlighten me about our conference expansion endgoal. Why did we add so many team? Did we think the WAC was going to come poach a few teams a few years ago when they were on their last leg and now we are just stuck with everyone? What was the story there?

Well, the official -- and laughable -- reason was to add large television market teams. The secondary goal was to prepare for Montana (and possibly msu) going FBS. The actual reason was to line Foolerton's pockets.

Simple enough, thanks Everett
