The Portal, the Tranfers, NIL, and maintaining sanity

take it for what it's worth, but i asked ai what the % of all players entering the portal don't find a new team, and this is the answer i got (side note - by saying players are 'still active', it means still active in the portal):

Roughly 30% to over 40% of college athletes entering the NCAA transfer portal don't find a new NCAA team, with recent data showing about 31% of D1 athletes still active and previous NCAA reports indicating over 40% of FBS players didn't land at a new school, leaving many with unmet goals or leaving the sport entirely. The percentage varies slightly by sport (e.g., FBS vs. FCS) and year, but a significant portion, often close to half, don't successfully transfer to another program
I’m betting a lot of agents aren’t sharing that reality with players and families.

Maybe they should have to.

One thing to remember about these stats is that a decent portion of that 30%-40% includes guys on teams that would have lost their scholarship or playing time in the old system anyway, and would've probably just left the team without any fanfare. These players are now "declaring for the portal" instead.

That AI answer includes ALL sports, not just football. So a bit misleading…

Well you keep posting that it's north of 65% of football players entering the portal not finding a new home, which seems really unbelievable, to me. Do you have a source for that number? The vast majority of Griz and other FCS players that have transferred out seem to have found a new spot over the last several years.

Yeah…I was incorrect. Mea Culpa. Just asked Grok a series of questions and it would appear that about 65-70% DO find new homes…but that’s still a 1/3 chance that you don’t. Understanding, of course, that many of those who don’t probably weren’t on scholarship anyways and end up leaving the sport…

Almost 9,000 in there now 😬

Players and their families have access to AI.

If they don't know how to use it then maybe they need just a little more student in the student-athlete designation.

It’s called Loyalty! Something important for anyone aspiring to be a man or leader! Unless you think money is more valuable than learning how to be a Warrior…
You go where you have the best opportunity to do better for yourself. Football is business. There is no place in business for loyalty. I have watched too many scholarship athletes lose their scholarships bc of injuries etc. Where was the loyalty from the coaches? AD? School? It doesn't exist.

Loyalty is a concept that is used to guilt people into to staying somewhere as long as it's to the advantage of the Managers/Coaches/Business owners/or whoever needs the person until they have used them up and replace them with the next best thing.

A football player is NOT a warrior, they are athletes. I never had to worry about getting shot or mortared on a football field. There is a HUGE difference. Also, as far as that goes, in the world of "warriors" there have always been mercenaries, and some of the best and most dedicated mercenaries were also the best warriors.

One needs to be quite literal with you! I see your answer is quite antithetical to the concept of team. No more metaphors for you. Some of the same things a coach expects from a player; a military leader expects of a soldier, airman, marine etc. It’s called the Warrior Ethos and applies to more than just warriors. Move along snowflake!

You're right. I am a snowflake and you're my huckleberry. I stand by my statement.

You would literally flounder as a college football coach.

I went to Griz game at Davis a couple years ago. Very cool area around the campus, the campus itself is nice and the stadium is a great setting.
If you are into outlet shopping, Vacaville down the road has one of the best outlet malls in the nation. I don’t think there is that much in the immediate area of Davis but if you drive a couple hours you can go to SF/Marin or Tahoe both of which are really cool.

HHB:

This reference does a nice job of explaining how, the ethos we’ve been discussing , applies to all facets of life we experience.

I think your main issue is thinking that a commitment for a player is more than 1 year, and in the current landscape it's not. A player should give it his everything for that year, but it is now a year to year proposition as to where he gives his everything. This is the flaw with your rant.
