The Portal and Its Effect on Recruiting QBs

Moving up isn’t going to fix the problem of QB’s hitting the portal for a better team/opportunity. NIL $$’s will.

Isn't is refreshing to actually have a thread talking about grizzly football, instead of reading the endless obsession about the travails of the team to our East? Jeeeez, it gets old!

While we used to be able to sign solid FBS quarterback drop-downs prior to the portal, and its lenient rules for transfers (Ochs, Swogger, Miller, Phillips, etc.) it is a new ballgame today trying to find a transfer QB. The FBS drop-downs which seem to be available to an FCS school are ones who are not good enough to play at any FBS school, even the bottom tier teams.

Even worse, recruiting a high school QB who ends-up being great only means that we will probably lose him to an FBS school. NAU found out the hard way with Martinez after his frosh season. And I predict that McCoy will transfer next season. I can't believe that he didn't after last season. It is a real problem now, and it will get no easier. I guess we need to get used to crap-shoot QB rentals in the future.

The portal has damaged FCS football more than anything I can remember. While I have never been a move-up advocate, I think that moving-up is the only way we can return to the level of football we used to enjoy. Frankly, the product on the field now is closer to Division II football than to FBS football. Even NDSU football is a shell of its former self.
