The "Play Joey Counts on Short Yardage Situations" Thread

I agree we can make more/better use of Counts, but I want to see the ball in Wilson's hands, especially on short yardage!

There is no way I had enough room to add "...and hand the rock to Jamal Wilson" in the thread title! Jesus, I didn't even have enough space to call it "The OFFICIAL Play Joey Counts..." thread! :)

Assuming Van is out this weekend they'd better give Counts the ball in more than just short yardage scenarios.

Well, I'm not suggesting he couldn't break away for a 75-yard touchdown on third and two.

Let me preface this by saying I LOVE Joey Counts, think he is a very good running back for a true sophomore and agree that he should and will get more totes. BUT HE DOES NOT HAVE THE SAME SPEED AS TRAVON VAN. And if you don't believe me, ask Joey.

No one said that. We are saying give him the ball inside the 3.

How about maybe? As great as Dan Moore was, he got us into trouble with fumbles more than once. My understanding is Counts still has a long ways to go in that area. Short yardage situations seem to come when you can least afford a turnover (not that you ever can) If you have trouble hanging onto the ball in practice, you will really have trouble hanging onto the ball in a game.

Next excuse. Your understanding is absolutely wrong. Counts has no problems hanging on to the ball. And so now look at the several fumbles by Canada and Van; what you say.....

He's faster, more efficient too. Counts is humble, not one to boast at expense of his teammates.

Counts should be the other main back. Van and Canada are good but the little I've seen of Counts is he is more powerful, yet has the same speed and shiftiness. People who say he doesn't have the shiftiness or speed of Van or Canada must be watching a different player. He is a little larger, speedier and shiftier Chase Reynolds--my favorite Griz player who handled the rock from the backfield. blasphemy!

THIS. Only opportunity, not just short yardage design play calling, and time will tell all. Hope he gets this. Believe he could accomplish alot for the Griz! Hope coaches didn't rely on Van and Canada too much by not keeping Counts up on reps with the 1's in practice. If this, then hope they invest reps in Counts this week.

GRizfan95, you should probably read every post before refuting mine. TWO posters have now said Counts is faster than Van. It's simply not true and Joey would be the first to admit. It is absurd, as fans, that you have to knock one player to tout the other. It's just dumb. I even prefaced my previous post by saying how good I think Counts is an he should get the rock more..

Same speed and shiftiness? Seriously?

I would go with "surprisingly speedy" - He is much faster than I thought he would be/faster than he looks

Of course Counts will be getting reps this week. As Van's injury was a game time thing, there wasn't exactly a lot of prep time for Counts in the 1 offense. You can "count" on seeing Counts this Saturday trading time with Canada. Here's hoping Van is well soon, that Counts delivers and that Wilson gets the rock on the next 4th and 1!
