The O Line

There are problems with blitz pickups. But I think they'll work through that & Stitt will find ways of making defenses pay for that strategy. Getting a couple of players back will be big as well.

The o-line has to have played well. Lots of TD and scoring. Only 2 sacks. Brady not being flushed out of the pocket. 440 yards of passing. A win. Compare to a year ago. JJ sacked multiple times, running for his life frequently, and getting clobbered frequently. Almost 550 yards. Seems like the o-line did much better this year than last year. Hats off to the o-line and Germer.
Most of the time, Brady had plenty of time to find his receiver, and was able to move into the pocket freely. I was very impressed at the quality of his defenders. Not perfect by any means, but by comparison, JJ was on his own far too much last year, and this year, for a first game, against a strong team like that, this is very encouraging.

JJ got sacked zero times last year by NDSU. He DID run for his life frequently, and got clobbered AFTER he threw or after being flushed out and running the ball...but no official sacks in last year's game--by either team.

Thx. Assumed he had to have gotten sacked, after the punishment he took. Where did you find the stats? I glanced at the gogriz site (didn't see prior years) and Big Sky site (nothing for 2014).

Did they call the fumble a sack? Not sure how that works - when the QB fumbles because of a hit like that in the act of trying to throw.

Yes, I believe a fumble like that is a sack, but don't know 100% for sure.

The Griz OL, this past Saturday, played better than they ever have. A huge improvement was on display.

Getting better, especially in the redzone/goaline, is needed. But this group has improved drastically and needs a standing ovation for what they did against NDSU, a truely GUTSY performance against a big, strong front 7.

Does PR fornicate in the woods?

yep, it is a sack...

Yes, the O-line played way above the level I thought they were capable of playing. One factor which helps versus last season is the design of Stitt's offense versus what Delaney ran. Lots of three-step drops now versus 5-step and 7-step drops last season. Remember how many long passes JJ launched last year with Kefense calling the plays? Different offense this season makes it a bit easier for the O-linemen to hold the defenders out on passing plays. They still need work on blocking for the running game, but it is not as critical in this offense, which relies more on finesse and deception on the running game than what Delaney TRIED TO RUN last season.

Schmaing had a hell of a game. I watched him a bit and he seemed to be imposing his will and winning battles throughout the game. Great job taking care of that blind side. Interior line appeared to give up the most pressures. Gus took some big shots, but not as many as JJ took last year. NDSU graduating their stud DE might be part of that, but the DL of NDSU is still probably the best they will face all year. Overall, you really have to be happy with the way they performed game 1. Germer has done a very very good job.

On Gus's worst hit Luke whiffed on the DT who blew past him relatively untouched. That was the most egregious whiff I saw from the interior line.

Yeah. That's the one that sticks out. Those are very good pair of DTs. Our guards were having trouble with them as well. Luke will only get better. Will be nice if we can get Weyer back healthy though.

What id like to know, is whether this is more a reflection of upgrading our oline coaching, coming of age with more experience, size etc of the young guys, getting schmaing back???? I think it's a bit of everything, but they did seem DRAMATICALLY improved

The O-lIne, and the team in general, is an entire year ahead of where I thought they would be. This team isn't quite a championship team, but is a playoff team right now. If this is how we are going to play (the evidence Saturday suggests Stitt knows how to keep them focused), we have a legitimate chance of making it to Frisco. I just can't believe they are where they are. Stitt and this staff are unbelievable!
No shit!!! Completely agree. In my wildest dreams I didn't think this offense would even look very good until maybe mid season. I saw a year like pflugrads first happening. Instead it appears that the players have learned the new system incredibly fast, which as you say, is a testament to the coaches and all their hard work, as well as our players!
