The New and Improved 4-Game Rule

I know many of you have heard about the changes to the four-game rule for red shirts. What a fascinating upgrade. Moving forward, you can play in 4 regular season games and then play the entire playoffs and still maintain your redshirt status. We have 4 games left so a redshirt could technically play all of those and then go ahead and play 4 playoff games, and still keep their red shirt.

While this is super interesting, we should get some confirmation beyond Herder. He doesn't seem to be the best source lately.

Riley, Kent and Sundberg were discussing this on the pregame show. herder actually got this one right.

Well, I will absolutely take that then. This is going to be a really interesting change.

So who’s the possible roster guy who might make them think about it? Great rule, but someone you know and love typically eschews playing freshmen. Unless it’s time to break the glass.

Iverson Young at RB maybe?

First name that came to my mind.

If we could ever get a big enough lead, Ah Yat would be another.

Lucas Freitas? Help on the O-line?

Wonder what it could mean for dudes taking a medical redshirt. I.e Nuce. If he was good to go come playoff time (assuming UM makes the playoffs), does that mean he can play and not lose the redshirt? Or does this just apply to “standard” redshirts?

It does not only apply to standard redshirts. Nuce is a perfect example of someone who could play games and reserve it

That example is in the article:

“An example of this is a true freshman playing in four or fewer games during the regular season, and then being able to play in the postseason and still maintain his redshirt, making him a redshirt freshman the next year. Another example could be a third-year junior who missed most of the regular season due to injury and he only played in four or fewer games. He could then return in the postseason if healthy and not burn that season toward his years of eligibility, allowing him to redshirt and return as a redshirt junior.”

Well I heard through the grapevine that Ah Yat was bumped to 2nd string for the Idaho game and Vidlak was 3. So if this new rule changed then it could be beneficial to a lot of schools teetering on whether or not they want to play some of their freshman. Go GRIZ!!!!

It doesn't apply to Ah Yat, he hasn't played in any games, dressing doesn't count only seeing the field. I believe Iverson Young and Lucas Freitas are the only true freshman to see the field this year.

But, It Would apply to Ah Yat if he plays in the next 4 games

Hell, I’d like to see all of them for UNC, give them a shot and see what they can do! 👍
