The Little Brown Stein

I doubt anyone ever mentions this on eGriz, but back when us real Griz fans were forged from the original ore mined from Mount Sentinel to form the Will of the First Fans, Idaho was considered our true rival; not MSU. The Union was young, and many true Montanans didn't take too kindly to outsider-type folks coming in trying to tell us how hats are worn in Philadelphia and Boston, let alone Moscow, Idaho.

Some of those early games were rough and ugly on and off the field. Some of the metal cleats and belt buckles the players and fans wore were founded into the steel supports of the bleachers at Dornblaser The Elder, and then again to make part of a goal post at Dornblaser The Younger. Some years later, after the coldest and loudest winter storm on record destroyed the goal posts, some of those original metals were included in the dental filling of a boy. That boy? None other than Bobby Hauck. In this way, some of Bobby's words are also the words of the First Fans. Hidden in those words is a sentiment. The sentiment is something no young poster on eGriz could know: The Idaho Vandals are the true rival that helped shape the state of this program. It's gone unmentioned until now.

Further evidence.

I know some of you will disagree, but I grew up a Griz fan in the heart of Bobcat country -- and, to me, the rivalry with Idaho can never compare to the rivalry with the Cats. The Griz could lose a dozen times to Idaho and I wouldn't much care (oh, I wouldn't be happy about the losses, but I could live with them). BUT, any loss to the Cats, at any level, in any sport, breaks my heart.

I agree with CDA's historical analysis with just one minor modification: young Bobby's goal post dental work went beyond "fillings."

Verily, I say to you, his entire set of teeth were forged from that solid Mount Sentinel iron ore. And he will chew up and spit out Vandals and Vikings and Eagles and other marauders on the turf of WA-Griz.

Nice writing CDAGriz. Very impressive work.

I look forward to watching the Mighty Vandals rip your team's collective O-ring in half.

I believe you meant to post this on that other board you frequent.

It is also written (so I'm told) in the annals of the Russell Trust Association minutes from a 12/29/2003 meeting, that BH was lowered, in a specially made sling, over a large vat of molten brass. Legs wide and arms akimbo, he was allowed to teabag the boiling pot. Through clenched teeth, he belted out Up With Montana, all the while fist-pumping the air.

I'm also given to understand that the Bonesmen sent a Scout to witness the event, even as BH was not a known Protestant, nor had he ever been a Whiffenpoof. The extant membership has been tight-lipped regarding other attendees that glorious night. Google that shit.

Pretty fucking high honor for a layman.

I think that MSU has passed idaho as the Griz primary rival because of the move to FBS. The younger fans haven’t seen the Idaho rivalry. I’m hoping that the rivalry rekindles and everyone can see it blossom into something special again.

It's inevitable. It's already starting and we aren't even playing in the Big Sky yet.

Oh I like those potato heads! Fresh banter!!! Much better than the old rehashed kitty litter thrown our way by the cat box faithful!

Calling Vandals potato heads is a misnomer ( got to head well south of the Palouse to find spuds).

The Vandellas are worse - they're freakin' hop heads!
