THE KICKOFF RETURN

THE KICKOFF RETURN

It looked extremely rocky for the Grizzly eleven that day;
The score stood 24 to 24 with the Coyotes in the red zone.
There was but a minute left to play and Coyotes going for a field goal;
And when the ball splits the uprights, a sickly silence fell upon the Griz fans.

A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The rest
Clung to the hope which springs eternal in the human breast.
They thought if only Ellis could get a shot at the kickoff return;
Brazen fans said they put up even money if they'd just kick to Ellis.

But it was thought the Coyotes would never kick to Ellis;
He had averaged 47 yards per reception and had scored two TD's.
So over that stricken multitude a grim melancholy hung,
For there seem but little chance of Ellis getting to the ball.

Nevertheless, there was ease in Ellis manner as he stood upon the five,
There was pride in Ellis' bearing and confidence in Ellis' manner.
Then the kicker carefully placed the ball upon the tee,
Lined it up and signaled his readiness via his raised hand.

A suspenseful cheer arose from Coyotes fans as the kicker advanced,
And then the leather pigskin hurtled through the air.
The kick went high and deep, but it headed towards Ellis,
Ellis caught the ball at the one and headed towards the middle.

He then cut to the outside at the 20, and got a block from Dallaserra,
And advanced to the 40 clinging to the edge just inside the boundary line.
He turned on the afterburners as the Coyotes pursuit closed in,
And then cut inside; the Coyotes angles of pursuit prove to shy.

It was then a foot race and from the multitude watching in the stands and on TV,
there arose a lusty yell and it rumbled throughout the Bitterroot, it rattled in the dells and knocked upon Mt. Sentinel before recoiling across the Flathead as Ellis crossed the goaline.

Throughout Griz Nation, the sun is shinning bright;
their whooping it up at the Mo Club and the Stocks.
Men are laughing, hearts are light and children shout;
For there is great joy in Grizzlyville as the Mighty Grizzly have won again.
