The inevitable happened

If you were not a Kool-Aid drinker going into to yesterday's game, you knew that we were probably going to get beat by Poly. You understood that our wins were against nobodys, and even some of those wins were ugly. Yet those in denial kept telling us about how great our defense was, how the o-line was getting better, etc.etc.

And now you saw the results against a very average football team. But first, to the fans still engaged in a pissing contest with Bobcat fans. Please worry about OUR program, and forget what is going on in Bozo-land! The facts are that they are dominating the in-state recruiting now, and their program is now on the upswing, while ours is on the downswing. You can call me names, or a bad fan, but you can not change the reality.

Our program is now nothing more than in the second tier of the Big Sky, along with Poly and NAU. We are nothing CLOSE to being a playoff team. And if we do somehow sneak in to an expanded playoff field (highly unlikely), we will be pummeled in the first game.

A couple of days ago, I started a thread with a formula to return to greatness. I stand by that formula today. We need to tell Delaney now that he is done after this season. Florida just did the same to their head coach Muschamp. We need to publicize the fact that he is "retiring', and unleash the wave of coaches throughout the nation who will privately contact our AD with interest in the job. Yes, there will be dozens of qualified coaches who will make that call, and we will have our pick of many great candidates.

I agree, as long as you get rid of that ridiculous requirement that the incoming coach keep 3-4 of the assistants. Was there a single phase of the game yesterday in which any fan was satisfied?

Yeah, I didn't think so.

Don't embellish. I said 3 coaches, and only two if the recruiting coordinator is either the O-line coach or the RB coach. I do not know who the recruiting coordinator is under Delaney. Any smart head coach coming into the program would want to keep as many commitments as possible, so keeping that coach is critical for continuity reasons. Here's a new flash for you. Requiring the head coach to keep an assistant coach is done routinely by programs at every level. It was done at Texas when strong was hired to replace Brown. Just one example.

Good post, the first problem is many may make contact, but the best coach for the job is either currently on staff or has prior connections to the program. The second problem is the U doesn't pay enough to attract the top coaching talent.

monte-I agree with everything you said. The real question is, will your AD pick the right coach and is it the decision of the AD to make or is this decision to be made your President. With the management you have over there I am thinking you will MD for another year.

This program will not be able to turn the page until Engstrom retires or realizes the benefits to the school of having a top teir team. Hopefully the alum can get him to see how much money he is losing the school.

What little conversation I've had it was communicated that Haslam is somewhat independent of Main Hall. Not sure I believe it but that's what's been said. IMO the last few years won't go away until we make a huge coaching change. Time to move on.

The UM coaching job, is, and always will be, a stepping stone for coaches. Every coach worth his whistle wants to eventually coach at the FBS level, or even in the NFL. We could pay $400,000 a year to a head coach, and he would still take the first plane out of Missoula for an FBS job.

Money is not the issue. We need to hire an up-and-coming coach from a Division II program who has had great success there. Brian Kelly, Joe Glenn, and Ash all came from those ranks. Just avoid the usual of hiring one of our current coaches. None are capable. We need new blood.

from reading posts like this you would think um was going to announce a $7M loss, not a donation of that amount. and while i don't think much of engstrom's performance in other aspects of running the university, or of his sticking with delaney, he's not the one throwing into double coverage all the time.
